Hotel cook changes roles to help deaf, staff communicate The Republican-American

Even though she's a key part of the team, it is unusual to see Rena Hobbs at the Heritage Hotel Resort and Conference Center on Heritage Road.

She's the one in the kitchen making those melt-in-your-mouth fish tacos and other delicacies that are served in the hotel's restaurants.

The line chef from Wolcott pulled a different kind of duty the first weekend in November, when the Deaf Women of New England Conference was held at the hotel.

Hobbs, 37, who is fluent in sign language because her parents are deaf, was the liaison between 80 conference attendees and the staff.
