Holiday fun with Alliance for Families with Deaf Children -- South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com

Recently, Alliance for Families with Deaf Children (AFDC) held their Holiday Networking and Fundraiser Party, raising funds for their Early Childhood and Family Literacy programs.

AFDC recognized local companies, donors, mentors and families for their many contributions and raised more than $4,000 for their Deaf and Hearing Early Childhood Program at Baby Boomers International Preschool. More than 80 guests attended the AFDC party at the Grand Lux Café in Sunrise.

"Grand Lux Café Manager Lisa Adams, who has a deaf child that participates in our programs, rallied the staff to give their own free time to this event." said Betsy Uliss, AFDC's board chairwoman. "It's a wonderful symbol of how much our services mean to these families and to the community when relatives, colleagues and friends come out in such numbers to support us."

The event featured silent auction items donated by the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, the Hard Rock Café, baskets by Flowers from the Rainflorist, Premier Beverage Company, Harmony Massage, Susie Scrumptious Cakes, J. Alexander's, Holistic Therapy Solutions and Mobile Medical Solutions.

AFDC's Deaf and Hearing Early Childhood Program is the only one of its kind in South Florida, offering a bilingual educational program starting from birth to five years old where American Sign Language, spoken and written English are used daily. Deaf and hard of hearing children use spoken language as well as improve their sign language and literacy skills. Through interacting with hearing peers and deaf and hard of hearing teachers, the children significantly improve their communication skills and socialization.
