NorthJersey.com: High School goes to National Academic Bowl Championship

Students from the Lake Drive Program at Mountain Lakes High School represented one of 16 schools competing in the 14th annual Academic Bowl for Deaf and Hard of Hearing High School Students sponsored by Gallaudet University. The two-day tournament took place April 25 and 26 in the university’s Kellogg Conference Hotel.

The Academic Bowl for Deaf and Hard of Hearing High School Students, like quiz bowls held at high schools and colleges all over the nation, is a game of questions and answers covering a broad range of topics. Unlike other competitions, however, questions at Gallaudet’s tournament will be posed in American Sign Language and, instead of signaling they have an answer with the sound of a buzzer, deaf and hard of hearing teams use a flashing light system.

Earlier this year, 76 teams of deaf and hard of hearing students from all-deaf, as well as mainstream, high schools participated in one of five regional contests. The three highest ranking teams, plus one at-large team, from those regional tournaments confronted one another in a bid to capture the National Academic Bowl trophy.
