Hi! ASL student question, haha

Hey everyone! My name is Blix and I'm a student at SUNY Potsdam in Potsdam, NY. After transferring here, I realized there was no ASL Organization or club! Horrible! So I'm starting one :) My question is, I want to travel to places where we can more integrate our club in Deaf culture, for educational and even social purposes. I know Rochester is a great city to explore - are there any places in particular in Rochester or somewhere on the East coast that you would recommend students of varying levels travel to to experience Deaf culture and maybe even make new friends? :)

Central park would be a good place to visit. Look for deaf ferrets and deaf cats, they make excellent friends.
 
What do you mean "organization or club". We don't have ASL organization or club. ASL is only sign language that we need to communicate, not for fun or to mimic to fool around with. I don't know what you are talking about when you think you can travel visiting places where you will find ASL organization or club. You might mean "Deaf event or the Deaf communities". If you can sign properly and not mimic just for fun, then that is the place where you will meet Deaf people who sign for conversation so that we can understand each other better. Do not laugh about it. ASL is not funny. We need it for communication. Hearing people laugh at us and try to mimic signs which they think is funny. They did not realize it is for communication so that we can understand.

Are you deaf or hearing? If you are hearing, then you have to realize that we can not hear sounds too well and could not pick up words. Lipreading is not 100% accurate. I have already repeated that on many of the threads I posted. If you are deaf, then you should know better. :roll:
 
Maybe there was a misinterpretation.

I am a hearing student. College compuses (of which I'm on) have organizations and clubs based on subjects we wish to learn more about or educate ourselves about. There are Spanish clubs, religious clubs and already on a few campuses, ASL Clubs - a place for people to learn, practice and educate themselves not only on ASL but of Deaf culture. It is not a bad thing - and certainly, there is no "mimicry."

Again, this is a positive place to learn and get involved with Deaf and ASL-related culture. Hearing people and HoH/Deaf people are all invited to talk and learn.

Hope that clears up any malaligned views.
 
My daughter is a freshman at our local university. They started an ASL club a couple of years ago and she signed up for it since she is taking ASL classes with me.

This is from their official constitution:

"We, the students at <university name>, do hereby, form the organization known as the American Sign Language Club for the purpose of informing the university and local community of deaf culture and offering the practical use of American Sign Language."

In the past they have visited Gallaudet, but due to the economy they are arranging to visit the local School for the Deaf to meet and interact with the kids. My daughter (and I) have already talked with someone at the school about this and she is excited to have them come. Just needs to clear things with the director at the school, etc.
 
It surprises me that you know of no place in Rochester area where to go to practice ASL. I mean, come on!!!
 
I don't live in Rochester, so i don't know anything about the city. And thanks LoveBlue :)
