hi you all, i am a father of a one year old girl who was diagnosed to be profoundly deaf 3months ago. so sad of me!last week i inplant cochear for her, and hope ererything could goes well!

Why so sad? I am 5th generation deaf and I am very happy. I am non-cochlear implant user.

Don't be sad. I'm non a cochlear impant user. I'm pretty much deaf and perfectly happy. I encourage you to read every threads of this forum.

Welcome. :)

I hope everything goes well for you too. Please search for the posts from GrendelQ; she has a young daughter who was implanted a while ago and is doing very well indeed.

It's normal to feel sad when you see this loss that you were not expecting. Another poster recently put up the "The Seven Stages of Grief" that might be useful. You can search for that phrase, too.

Good luck; I hope it all goes well for your daughter and for your family as you learn how to deal with this.

That goes for me, too. I am perfectly happy being a Deaf person.

:welcome: to AllDeaf forum, Heartbroken. Just accept her being a deaf person. Hopefully that you can provide her with Deaf program whether at a Deaf school or the mainstream schools with accommodations like Chinese Sign Language interpreters, notetakers, and closed captioned T.V. in the schools. Trying to adapt into the hearing world is not the way to go as she will get frustrated every time someone like you or another hearing person want her or him to be like them as hearing person. Not going to happen like that. :nono: So get real and live with her as a deaf person. She will be happy being with other deaf children and learn Chinese Sign Language. You can learn Chinese Sign Language to communicate with her.

Now that you are here, I hope you enjoy reading and posting all the threads here. See you around here.

Thanks for reply me, i give my daughter implant cochear because i wanna she can hear and speak like normal child, i don't wanna her only use sign language to communciate and become a disable people because she will be discriminated by others and will not enter the mainstream society. If that happens it is so cruelty to her when she adult.

Hi...I am a deaf person with no cochlear implants and I am living life to the fullest and happy.

thanks for reply. i wanna why don't you use cochlear implants?because it is so expensive(it is really expensive indeed for me ,i borrowed so many money for my lovely daughter) or something else?as i know cochlear implant is the most advanced technology for deaf people in the world.

I grew up without one and fluent in sign language. Iam happy with the way I am. I am not interested in getting a cochlear implant.

All of us, deaf people, are normal. Many of use sign language and are fine. As for discrimination....there will always be discrimination by ignorant hearing people even if we can speak. Trying to make ourselves normal and denying our deafness usually has a negative impact on our lives. Trying to make your daughter hearing and giving the impression that being deaf is bad isn't good for her.

We had gone through that with the hearing aids issues before the CI (Cochlear Implant) came along. Most of the hearing parents and hearing authorities expected us to be hearing with no sign language. That is the most cruelest abuse of not understanding what people are saying in schools and public places. We are visual people. We need to use our eyes to try to lipread but not accurate to lipread and to use sign language. Sign Language is our primary language so that we can understand more fully. By CI, your daughter will have a hard time understand people with listening and to speak perfect. CI is just a hearing device, a tool for us to hear sounds but not to pick up words very well or none at all. It is not a miracle at all. It is exactly the same like hearing aid. You don't want your daughter to go through a difficult time in the mainstream school (no accommodations like sign language and other needed accommodations in the schools).

I had gone through the same thing only that I have one hearing aid on my left ear and totally deaf on my right ear. The hearing authorities think that I should be able to hear and listen to what they say. Not true at all. I suffered a lot in the mainstream schools both elementary and high school. I was not happy. I was very miserable and never had good grades like A,B, or C. All I get was either D or Fail. I managed to graduated from high school with my poor grades. :ugh:

You need to sign with her in Chinese Sign Language as way to communicate with her. Don't worry about her speech as we don't speak perfect. She can speak later but still need to use sign language to communicate very clearly. She need to be a deaf person, not a hearing person. You can not make her hear like you think CI will make her hear clearly like a hearing person. You have to wake up and face the reality knowing that your daughter will always be deaf for the rest of her life. Being d/Deaf is not bad and we all adapted to be a very happy Deaf people. So give her some respect for having her be a deaf person.
