Hersey's Deaf Academic Bowl Team Stands Tall in National Competition — Arlington Heights news, photos and events — TribLocal.com
John Hersey High School’s Deaf Academic Bowl team recently competed in the 15th Annual Deaf Academic Bowl competition at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. against the best and brightest deaf and hard of hearing students in the nation. The four-day event, Saturday through Tuesday, March 5-8, saw the Huskies perform beyond expectations, matching wits with outstanding competitors on a wide range of topics in a "Jeopardy!" style format.
The three-member team, under the direction of Bob Grindrod and Racheal Griffin, was comprised of senior Justin Quan, junior Allison Friedman, and freshman Lauren Holtz. Three hundred and twenty students in 78 teams from around the country competed. Hersey started strongly by winning the first four matches to reach the round of 32, in which Hersey went on to win three of the seven matches. However, that record left the Huskies just short of the team making it to the round of 16.
Grindrod commented, "It has been a wonderful experience for everyone. The kids are great! I am more proud than I can say."
