Victoria Advocate | Heart Sign reaches out to deaf community

Goliad school district faculty members Mark and Kimann England also have another passion - working with the deaf. In addition to Kimann sponsoring the American Sign Language Youth Council in the school district, the husband and wife team formed Heart Sign, a sign language ministry to support hard of hearing and deaf children and their families by means of camps, retreats and workshops.


HISTORY: Founded locally in 2009


AREAS SERVED: Victoria and surrounding South Texas areas


SERVICES PROVIDED: American Sign Language classes for kids and adults "Signing Saturdays," American Sign Language gatherings for hearing impaired and deaf.

Deaf adult retreats.

Camps for kids who use American Sign Language or who want to learn American Sign Language .

Mentor programs for kids who use American Sign Language or who want to learn it.

Lending library for family members of deaf children to help reinforce sign language learned in class.


NUMBER OF PEOPLE SERVED ANNUALLY: About 70.


ANNUAL BUDGET: $5,000 start-up.


GREATEST NEEDS:

Videos to use in the classes and for parents to check out.

Cash donations to help children attend camp.

Cash donations for counselors to attend camp.


STAFF:

Mark and Kimann England, Executive Directors.

No paid staff members.

Volunteers include Bum and Debbie Phillips
