Hear's a great way to help deaf, blind kids - Community - Village Voice

Rozelle resident Ronnie Lam has won a prestigious Churchill Fellowship for using his passion for film and animation to help children who are deaf and blind.

The 26-year-old works at the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children's (RIDBC) Teleschool at North Rocks and was recognised for his work over the past two years in developing educational multimedia resources such as DVDs, CDs, videos and print material to assist families of hearing or visually-impaired children in rural and regional Australia.

Churchill Fellowships are awarded every year to Australians older than 18 from all walks of life and provide the financial opportunity to travel overseas to undertake an analysis, study or investigation of a project.

Mr Lam has been granted $25,000 to travel to the United States and United Kingdom to study cutting edge multimedia technologies and how they are supporting the education of blind and vision impaired children in regional and remote areas.

He'll also explore the latest developments in this field.

"I was initially quite shocked and incredibly humbled and privileged," Mr Lam said when asked how he felt when he won the award, and said that his project had been rewarding and was having positive results.

"The program is quite unique and groundbreaking in that [a sector of the NSW rural population] was getting a quite limited level of support as there aren't a lot of professionals who live in rural and regional areas that work with kids with impairments," he said. "Being able to deliver [the multimedia educational tools] gives this segment of the population a level of support that's quite unique."

This is the second year running that an RIDBC staff member has been recognised for their work through a Churchill Fellowship.

Mr Lam will embark on his five- week trip in September. The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust awards Churchill Fellowships to Australians so they can travel overseas for up to eight weeks to further their study or investigation of an issue.
