Hearing Videophones?

Hi all,
I am currently a hearing student (as you may have guessed from my screen name) in an interpreting program and plan to graduate in May of 2011. I am seeking your advice and assistance on videophones for hearing people. As a future interpreter, I feel a VP would be a good investment. And, on top of that, I have some Deaf friends that I would like to communicate with directly rather than going through an interpreter on the phone. How have you folks worked out this issue? I know Sorenson doesn't sell to hearing customers and D-Link has discontinued many of its models. Any ideas?

Thanks!
Brendan

Ha. I wish. I had thought of that, but you can't use Skype to call a VP, can you? The problem is most of my Deaf friends do not use Skype and many don't even know what Skype is. Is there a way to call at VP from Skype that you know of? Also, the quality doesn't compare to VP, does it? I don't know. It seems strange that it is this difficult for hearing people to find a videophone service.

I use it to talk with my hearing family. It works for us. But we are patient people.

I forgot to mention even tempered.

I know other deaf people who use Skype as a means to communicate with hearing face to face if they don't want to IM or text.

I am pretty sure you could tell your friends what it is.

I am Deaf and I think I may have found out on my own. Really I bet your friends can understand.

Depend if you want to pay a monthly fee or not. I know a few people that pay a monthly fee to communicate with the Deaf... can't vouch for the service since I haven't tried it out myself.
