Hearing For One Day

Two weeks ago, I woke up with a blinding headache. Thinking it was a migraine headache, I took a few Tylenol and headed to work. Suddenly I heard a truck passing me while I was driving. The sound came from my left ear. I had not been wearing a hearing aid or cochlear implant. I was totally deaf that morning but suddenly I was hearing all sounds from my left ear as if my hearing loss was magically cured. It was a strange sensation....I have never heard from my ears naturally my whole life. I heard everything on my path that day while suffering from blinding migraines and pain in my cheeks.

The next morning, the headaches and my hearing was gone.

I called my doctor about it and he has never heard of anything like this. I have asked around if it is common but no one has ever heard of it.

Any of you know what this is???? My best theory is that I had build up pressure in my ear, causing headaches thus stimulating my dead hair cells.

Your 2 cents on this?

P.S. Im glad that Im not hearing! I didnt like any of these sounds I heard. It was too creepy to hear myself talking or other voices clearly and everything else too. Silence is golden, indeed! ;)

I can't offer any insight, but what an intriguing story! I'm sorry you had such a headache, though!

I hope others can offer you some thoughts on your "cure".

Btw, I can sort of relate to *wanting* selective hearing; especially when the kids are around, and I hear "Leave your sister alone! Didn't I tell you NO?! WHAT did I say?!" at various decibels. Oy! :ugh:

Yes, dear, Meggie. Silence must be golden. Is it? I wouldn't know!

Did a truck in fact pass you when you heard it?

I have had this happen to me plenty of times before and my audiologist told me it was more than likely phantom hearing, very similar to the phantom limb phenomena that many amputees experience.

Yes but I heard people talking to me, clattering of dishes, birds chirping, rushing of water, my daughters talking to me etc etc. It wasnt just the truck but it was when I first noticed that I could hear things. I thought I had my CI on but I wasnt wearing my CI.

I do understand what you mean, Meg. I doubt it is phantom hearing as Private Parts described it.

A good example that happened to me was when I was in a subway at NYC and I heard something CLEAR and I did recongize it to be music.. I looked around the subway and there was this guy playing his violin and I told my husband C (then a boyfriend) that I could hear the music. C was like "really??" and hypothesized it could be the metal walls that somehow gave his music a weight of resonance which hit my ear canal at a certain angle to enable me to hear.

It happened me not too often but often enough for me to acknowledge that I do have occassional hearing. Sometime I could hear people talking and I can identify who is talking and how their voice sound like.
I think it is all about how I direct my ear... if I cup my ears all the times, I am sure I can hear everything... maybe better with my left ear (it seems to be more receptive to sounds than my right ear). But I doubt I look attractive with my hands holding up as if I am mimicing an elephant.

It could be the pressure as well-- the air... my husband told me about the time of day does affect the sounds because of the saturation in the air... afternoons are the best for music bands to play since the sound will travel longer and sound much better. (He used to be in a school band.. yes, he was a profoundly deaf student playing the flute)

So intriguing! I am glad I am not the only one that is getting this-- C does give me the weird look sometime as if I was bullshitting him. ARGH! But I enjoy it sometime, especially when it comes to music or my husband's voice.

How very extraordinairy!!
I don't have an explanation either..

isn't it something to be able to hear....

I´m sure it´s tinnitis...

I would suggest you to check with your doctor about ear test either it´s really tinnitis or not. Yes, I´m sure it´s tinnties because your desciption is match prefectly.

I has the same problem as you. I had it sometimes but no more since few years ago. It come back few weeks ago.

How long have you notice like this? I mean... How long you "hear" funny sounds which different hear sound from HA which I last wore HA at 20 years ago.. Me.. around 5 minutes, then gone then later again 10 minutes then gone... no more then months later then again...

I went to doctor for the check because I thought I´m "hearing". They test and found out that it´s tinnitis.

It will never cure deaf into hearing.... Never...

That's totally bizarre. I'm not sure what to say either.

But just plainly amazing that this even happened.

amazing! That baffles doctors and scientists, kinda a mystery for many people. I'm glad ur headache didn't last. :)

Meg,

Your not alone, I have heard few things in my unimplanted ear and sometime I wonder why it works now not before. I Haven't told my audiologist about this but I shall do that soon..

Whew Im glad that Im not the only one. Thought I was losing my mind. I never got migraines until I got CI and I seem to have a lot of pressure in my head but it was first time that I was able to hear. Someone told me that it will happen again.

Hmm thats a possibility but thought tinnitus means hearing ringing sounds only? I heard many different sounds clearly. I didnt hear any ringing.

I have no clue what would cause that, but I find it fascinating. Thanks for sharing that... now Im always going to wonder if something like that might happen to one of my kids, and how they feel about it...
