Hi folks,
I'm new on this site. I'm a hard-of-hearing nurse in Oconee County, SC. I need new hearing aids and I'm overwhelmed by the hard-sell market and the variety of choices and prices.
Any advice????

My first advice is to find an Audiologist that you trust. Explore your options with him/her and make sure you find something that first you can afford or insurance can cover. Something that is good for YOUR hearing loss and something that makes you feel comfortable. I have an audi I trust through and through and the aids we decided on suit my needs to the full extent. I have 2 digital BTE's and I couldn't be happier. It is all about what YOU want, remember you are going to be the one with them. A lot of companies offer you a few weeks trial to see if you like them. Happy hunting and I hope you find what you are looking for :)

my insuer only payed for 2 kinds one the was in the ear the other the BTE that i picked out because I could get it in purple , it took a month to get used to "haveing a thing be hind my ear" I personally don't care about hiding my hearing aids the ones I have are made by oticon , they work well enof for me but my hearing loss is not saveer just anyoing when watching tv or paying any attention in class ;) , i think it might help you to find an audiologist that knows sign , mees s/he has taken the time to get more understanding and this person will be morelikely to hunt down the perfect HA for you.
 
Keep in mind the capatability and capability of hearing aids and adapted technology in stethescopes; that is if you need to use one. I know there are plenty of places and positions as a nurse where we don't need stethescopes. Also this is all dependent on how well you can be aided across frequencies (ability to auscultate heart, breath, or bowel sounds). Discuss this with an audioligist early so you can be best assisted to increase your ability and capabilities in the clinical settings within the hospital. You can ask me or Private message me with your questions with what I said, I know its always helpful to have someone who "has been there" and can inform based on experience in addition to those who are "only informed"

Hi Marcia! My best advice is to opt for BTEs. The dinky aids really don't give as much power. Also take advantage of the trial period and try out both analogs and digital aids. Digital aids aren't always the best. They have improved from the 90's, but you still gotta try the actuall aid out yourself to see how much it benifits you.

candybrowneyes is right. Trust between you and your audi is the most important thing. I would look for one that is not affiliated with one specific brand but deals with many. That gives you more options. Mine, for example, dealt with three or four companies. He had "loaners" for almost all of them and when I chose one, he had access to their reps to come in and "fine tune" things.

First off, I know I'm new to this web site.. and this is my first post, but I would like to "respectfully" disagree with CBE's comment.

As a HOH HA owner/wearer myself (Starkey J13 Cierra BTE's), I feel I'm qualified to reply on the above.

One should never make a final determination of what they're going to wear as a HA based solely on "what they want".. but rather it should be "what's best for them" as it pertains to their particular hearing circumstances and the recommendations given by their Audi/BC-HIS.

Oh sure, maybe "you want" a cic HA.. but if your hearing is such that you need a "Power BTE", then "what you want isn't what you need"!

Once again, I wasn't looking to rankle any feathers on my first post.. but only to give a somewhat different idea on the situation.

My son's are blue :) His audi picked out the units and being I was HA ignorant, I just picked out the color LOL he's got Vigo Pro's by Oticon...
