Hearing Aid complaints

What do you mean "if it was indeed expensive". If it is a good hearing aid you bet it was expensive. The program exists because there are charitable people out there realizing there is little financial help for hearing aids. Not because the hearing aids are cheap.

I'm sure you already know this, a lot of the hearing aid manufacturers will take in used hearing aids, fix them up and then send them off to third-world countries free of charge.

My audi has a doctorate and I know that I'm in good hands. That's why I chose her. There's also a business side because any professional practice is a business (whether the professional likes is or not--probably the latter). I was talking about the business side and in no way commenting on anyone's professional ability.

The OP named this thread "Hearing Aid Complaints" and that's what he/she got. If the OP had named this thread something like "How Hearing Aids Help" or "What You Love About Your Audiologist," we'd be having a different discussion. Never ask anything on AD unless you want to know the truth. If the OP had introduced himself/herself (we don't even know the person's gender) and read some threads before plowing into a "Complaint" thread, the OP would have gotten a better reception.

I'm irritated with hearies calling me "hearing impaired" and making other negative assumptions based on my hearing status. Color me cranky, because a hearie gave me the "funeral face" during my ASL class today. I was at the DEAF CENTER, for gawd sake. Dear hearies, please be respectful when you enter a deaf/Deaf/HOH space. K. Thx. Bai.

You made some good points.

If everyone is worried about hearing aid dealers making money off of them, why don't you get your audiology services through a hospital or university?

It's not so much that we don't audis to make money off us. We're struggling to afford what we need. $6k with no insurance coverage for me (on top of other medical bills). I don't have the option that you're describing. Children may have more options.

My daughter's audiologist works for a state university. They see both adults and children. Both state universities in my town have ENT and audiology practices for adults and the children's hospital has one (seperate) for children.

I don't want to be unemployeed and on SSDI so i can get HAs or Cis for free. No thanks.

FF, never suggested that you should. Like you, almost all of my money goes to what the kids need.

Which is why they need to mandate the coverage of hearing aids from any health insurance carriers.

FJ, I don't live in an university town. At least, not for audiology.

same here, we are struggling with our finance and all of $ that goes to what the kids need. My insurance does not cover HAs, but My insurance only can cover CIs some of them, not cover some of these fees such as a visitor at the audiolgist. If my hubby needs to return to audioglist for adjusting his mapping on his CI, and the insurance wasn't covered it. he had to pay about 100 bucks for one visit. Jeez. He stopped going there only if it's really necessary. how sad is that non cover with some of lists at the audiologist. =/

I know some of my friends who used to have HAs all their lives when they were kids. They were under their parents' roof until they turned 18. The following years later, they could not afford HAs so they don't wear HAs anymore due to $$. Jeez.

The issue about audi's feel they need to "fix" people is just false. That doesn't happen. Ever.

There is a single reason anyone would go see an audi in the first place. Because they want to hear or to see if there is anything that would allow them to hear.

So what the heck does an audi have to do with deaf culture? That's not even an issue. There is one single issue "Can a device give me the ability to hear".

If the person did not want this then they shouldn't go to an audi about it. So, from that moment their job is to find out if a device they can provide will give them the ability to hear and which one would be best for the individuals needs.

Nothing to do with deaf culture. Nothing to do with ASL.

For the record I wore hearing aids from the 4th grade till my early 20's. Was deaf for the next almost 20 years of my life. I just got my CI activated 4 months ago. So I'm not talking about this as an outsider.

The price of anything medical is higher. And I do mean everything. From aspirin to eye glasses and hearing aids. If a specialist (Doctor, audi, etc..) are involved then the prices will be much higher then purchasing the same thing else ware. There's just so many people, organizations and manufacturers involved. Not to mention insurance companies.

I also agree. They have to make a profit. Not just the distributors but everyone involved in the production and distribution of a product. And all of them have to make a profit. I'm not saying I like the outcome and high prices. But be careful who you point the blame on for that.

So this is where we all need to get involved.

In my state's hearing society we got legislation passed requiring all state employees to have $2,800 in hearing aid coverage. All private citizens are required to be offered $2,800 in coverage through their insurance company also. Of course, we need to get the word out for people to sign up for it.

I am sorry I used the word hearing impaired.....I was talking about my patients with hearing loss. How do you label someone with hearing loss? They aren't deaf.

Hard of Hearing= HOH

So you're denying my experience? Interesting that you feel entitled to do that. She apologized to me after my booth hearing examination. I'm not stupid. I was there and I know what happened.

Huge loss in a short period of time. I need to know my hearing status. I must at least document it.

Hard of Hearing= HOH

I guess it varies person to person?? I have seen more people take offense to that term than to hearing impaired.

Maybe an explanation from sally or you on why hearing impaired is such a bad word? If you have hearing loss....then your hearing is impaired.

I am near-sighted....so my eyesight is impaired. I apologize that I don't understand the bad connotation with the term.

Well, in general, it's better to say deaf and hard of hearing rather than hearing impaired. We just prefer it that way.
