Rally drivers Jayne Auden and Amanda Cornforth will team-up together for a one-off outing to promote deaf awareness and raise money for the Hearing Dogs for Deaf People charity when they contest the Jim Clark National Rally on May 25-26.

Stockport-based Auden, who is hard of hearing, will drive her David Auden and Associates Insurance Brokers and 6th Gear PR-backed 1400cc MG ZR while Cornforth, from Thirsk, will swap her usual Ford Ka driver’s seat to co-drive as the all-female team take on the Scottish Borders-based tarmac event with the aim of raising funds for the Hearing Dogs charity under the campaign name “Hear and Now” and promote awareness of the condition which affects around nine million people in Britain.

As Auden proves, being hearing impaired does not restrict you from doing anything. The 25 year-old insurance clerk was born hard of hearing but hears through the use of digital hearing aids and it has not prevented her taking up a sport that she had longed to do since childhood.

Auden has been involved in rallying since the age of 16 and has driven competitively since she was 19. Last season she won the BTRDA (British Trials and Rally Drivers Association) Lady Driver’s title and this year is contesting selected events in her MG ZR with her father Dave as her regular co-driver.

She said: “My deafness has never got in the way of anything I want to do, whether it be my rally driving or work, I just don’t see it as an issue and I want to help other hearing impaired people realise this and maybe even inspire them in some way through my rally driving.

“We have chosen to do the Jim Clark Rally to do this as it is a high profile event that is also on the British Rally Championship calendar and we hope to raise as much money as possible for a charity I strongly support (the Hearing Dogs for Deaf People) and make people aware that anything is possible.

“It’s a bit different from the normal rallies we do as well because it’s on tarmac and is two days, whereas I normally compete on one-day forest gravel events. Amanda has also changed her role as a driver to co-drive for me to make an all-female team.”

Cornforth, 24, added: “It’s a good way to raise the profile of a really worthwhile charity through our sport. I knew very little about the Hearing Dogs for Deaf People before I met Jayne and the work they do has astounded me, they are essentially two charities in one. Jayne has also amazed me by the fact that her deafness does not stop her doing anything and this is an important message to give.”

The Jim Clark Rally is round two of the British Rally Championship, the UK’s top series, and round four of the Irish Tarmac Championship. The national rally consists of 100 stage miles using closed public roads in the Scottish Borders over two days, with rally HQ based in Kelso.

The Hearing Dogs for Deaf People was set up in 1982 and they take dogs from rescue centres, which they then train to alert deaf people to specific sounds. To date they have placed nearly 1,300 hearing dogs throughout England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands, changing the lives of many people.

The Hearing Dogs receives no government funding and relies solely on the generosity of individuals and organisations in order to keep helping deaf people and unwanted dogs. More than half a million people have profound or severe hearing loss and could potentially benefit from having a hearing dog.

If you would like to sponsor or support Jayne and Amanda and help them raise money for a worthy cause on their rally challenge, please email: jayneandamanda@googlemail.com or visit the website: Hear and Now: Rally girls raising deaf awareness. Supporters and businesses that give £100 or more will be shown on the car for the Jim Clark Rally.

All money raised will go directly to the charity, with no costs being taken out of the fund.
