Health Science Center offering teacher scholarships to deaf education program | San Antonio Business Journal

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio won an $806,500 grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services to fund scholarships for 36 teachers and support staff.

The scholarship money will be given to students interested in taking the master of deaf education and hearing science program. Through this program, teachers are trained to work with hearing-impaired children and help them speak. Children are taught to speak using a combination of amplification technology and individual therapy.

Enrollment in the university’s program has grown from six students to 23 students ever since Blane Trautwein joined the Health Science Center staff as director of the program in 2008.

The Health Science Center Deaf Education and Hearing Science Program has a close partnership with the Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children in San Antonio. Sunshine Cottage serves as a laboratory setting for the university. Students enrolled in the master’s program participate in more than 350 clinical hours throughout the two-year master’s program.

The UT Health Science Center offers schools in medicine, nursing, dentistry, health professions and graduate biomedical sciences.
