Honolulu City Councilman Charles Djou has the advantage in the special election for Congress, a new Hawai’i Poll has found, giving Republicans the best opportunity in two decades to claim the urban Honolulu district.

Djou leads with 36 percent, former congressman Ed Case is chasing at 28 percent, and state Senate President Colleen Hanabusa is trailing with 22 percent. Thirteen percent were undecided.

The poll, taken for The Advertiser and Hawai’i News Now, confirms fears among Democrats that Case and Hanabusa could split the Democratic vote in the winner-take-all election and help Djou score a rare Republican upset.

Never say never, especially after when Mass. voters voted for a Republican senator. Hawaii is probably the 2nd bluest states around.

Oh, btw, two districts have special elections to fill open seats....this month.

Massachusetts was a fluke but I won't take this "victory" away from the leeches of the Republican Party.

No fluke. There was Massachusetts (the bluest of the blue states), New Jersey and Virginia that were won by Republicans this year's election already. And by a healthy margin, too. All this was the will of the people who made sure of that. So, the trend is, so far, decidely in the Conservative/Republican direction.

Not true, Virginia isn't always blue state since they are toss-up.

State government has nothing with situation over federal and they won via low vote turnout due odd year.

That's just your wish thinking.

I didn't say anything about Virginia. I was talking about Mass. being the bluest of the blue.

Regardless of the voters turnout, the trend still shows in favor of winning Republican seats or offices.

Even if they do win, SO WHAT?

What are they going to do that will set themselves apart from Democrats?

Neither party has anything left in their bag of tricks that will convince me that they'll one-up the other.

Public sentiments and trend tell a different story for November 2010.

I'm from Virginia and it surprises me that it even turns blue. I don't know many hearing liberals outside the Deaf and Black community other than my brother and sister in law and they live in NC.

I guess the younger voters in Virginia are turning more liberal than the mainstream in VA. I don't know too many people younger than me..
