Sometimes, it's not that person who's doing it to you intentionally... actually a victim of a virus that's using his name.

My friends and I had this same problem. I received an e-mail from a friend of mine. The e-mail address was correct. In the e-mail, there was a message that sounded real and ended with "Here are the pictures from our last event."

Apparently, my friend was hit with a virus... a SMART virus. What this virus does is scans my friend's computer and e-mails for most commonly used phrases and applies those phrases to e-mails to friends that those most commonly used phrases apply to. For instance, some of the people that were on my friend's list were part of a club that my friend was in. So, the most commonly used phrase was the name of the club and the most common thing they did together were host various events. So, what happened was... those people received email from my friend with a message saying, "Here are the pictures from our recent (organization name) event." Sadly, many of those people downloaded the virus as well. As a result, they had to take their computer to ResNet (RIT's resident network assistance office) to have their computers fixed.

I've been using e-mails for over 10 years. So, I'm able to look at the email and determine whether it's fake or not. I check the IP details. I check the signature. I check the language. (Some of my friends have bad grammar.) I check a lot of things.

The same thing applies to AIM. A person, that I haven't talked to in 6 months and only talked to once, IMs me with a link telling me to check out vacation pictures that she took. I don't know this person. Why would a stranger suddenly open up to me? That's a big hint. Heh!

Vampy.....you tawking about me when it comes to AIM? Sorry about that....I accidently clicked on a link that someone sent me....ugh!
