17 Arrested at Florida Neo-Nazi Rally

Sat Feb 25, 7:30 PM ET

ORLANDO, Fla. - Fistfights broke out and police made 17 arrests Saturday at a neo-Nazi rally and march through a predominantly black neighborhood.

In khaki uniforms, tall black boots and red arm patches bearing swastikas, about 30 members of the National Socialist Movement were barricaded on one side by SWAT team members at the rally. On the other side of the SWAT officers, a group of about 100 black-clad counter-demonstrators, many covering their faces with black masks, held anti-Nazi signs.

Several counter-demonstrators were arrested before the march officially began when pockets of violence erupted, police said. It was not immediately clear whether anyone was hurt.

The march went on as planned through the Orlando neighborhood of Parramore, with about 500 spectators and counter-demonstrators following the group. Grandparents held the hands of their grandchildren as they watched the march from the front of their homes.

"The older generation grew up seeing hate. They grew up seeing these kinds of groups being open and I think for some African-Americans they want the younger generations to see that hate still exists," said the Rev. O'Hara Black of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

No members of the neo-Nazi group were arrested, police said.

Fourteen of those arrested are members of out-of-town groups such as the Skinheads Against Racial Prejudices and the Southeastern Anarchist Network, said Orlando police spokeswoman Barb Jones. All faced charges including disorderly conduct, battery on a law enforcement officer and wearing a mask, police said.

More than 300 law enforcement officers were on hand, hoping to avoid the violence that marked another gathering of the Minneapolis-based neo-Nazi group in October in Toledo, Ohio. A march there led to a riot in which businesses were burned and looted and bricks were thrown at police.

On Saturday, neo-Nazis held signs with such slogans as "White People Unite" and statistics claiming that crime is predominantly committed by blacks. Later, they made Nazi salutes at City Hall as a SWAT team separated the demonstrators from a jeering crowd.

During the march, the neo-Nazis walked on one side of the road and the protesters on the other, separated by two lines of police. Both groups hurled insults.

Counter-demonstrators held signs including ones that read, "Stop the hate. Stop the violence" and "Love everyone."

"For them to come into our neighborhood, it's wrong; it's a slap in the face," said Donnell Jones, 33.

Er...why does that surprise you?

Nothing new under the sun, it was as of old.

There will always be hatred in this world and not necessarily just this type either. You got ancient hatreds in the Middle East like the Sunnites against the Shiites (same faith basic faith with slight but apparently critical differences). Then there is the Greek and Turkish paranoria. The list goes on. Hate is not rational and as long as that is true...it will always exist.

I agree it ought not be. Bottomline, people are not so different as they believe it to be.

This is terribly sad Miss P - thank you for sharing this. Some people are stuck in the dark ages.

Well I don't understand why some white people hate us Black people. What they want from us? We don't want to pick their cotton.

They treat us like dogs, but hey we just wanna be treated equal.

Miss P - think about the way you feel about gay men. Now just substitute the words "gay men" for the word "black" and you will begin to understand how some people justify hate.

Huh? Gay men were never treated less...

Look at FBI Hoover, Liberace, Rock Hudson, Boy George, Elton John, Marilyn Monroe claimed she was bisexual...

I don't ever see KKK or Neo Nazi marching in gay neighborhood in San Francisco.

I am sure Matthew Shepard's parents would beg to differ.

Circa 50 years ago in the US it was illegal to *be* gay. Until the ruling in Lawrence vs Texas a few years ago, there were still a handful of states where homosexuality was illegal. Even today, in many countries in this world, being gay is enough to get you executed or sent to jail for life.

In Nazi Germany, homosexuality was illegal--Gays and lesbians were rounded up and executed en masse just like Jews and the other groups the National Socialists didn't like. This is the origin of the gay pride simple the pink triangle--It is what the Nazis used to identify gay men in the camps. (For Lesbians it was a black triangle.)

The fact that they haven't marched there is a matter of numbers. There's not that many Nazis around anymore.

Gwen Araujo's parents too, although she was transgendered rather than gay.

Oh so Neo Nazi and some white people are prejudice against people because they are fat, ugly, black, jew, or gay.

I was on AOL chatting, and some people said they won't vote for fat people on american idol and they were namecalling the fat people and saying oink oink oink.

There are too many ignorant people in the world.

From my lurking on Stormfront, it does seem that a LOT of those Neo-Nazis are simply buying into the ingrained racism that is a part of American society.
Those are the same folks who claimed that Irish folks and Italien folks were dirty useless animals back in the 1920's.
