"Hard of Hearing"

Interesting the details on the U.K system. You're right, that would add up to quite a bit.

Phone service rates here can vary a lot, especially in the cell phone category, but land-line is pretty cheap. I pay about $30 a month for one line. That includes Caller ID, but not long-distance calls, for which we use either my husband's cell or a dial-around number.

I think a second line would not cost very much, but don't know about installation charges.

UK only national wide telephone for the hard of hearing and deaf is Text Relay.

It very slow and not suited for me at all.

Hoping one day get VRS. There is new trial system going on that is works bit like CapTel. Let see if I find the website. Be right back.

EDIT: Found the website but can't find the info if you able to do this cos trial have finished.

Hey thanks for that, sounds like the system has actually just gone live, but the FAQ doesn't tell you a lot about it, and their Facebook page shows that current costs are £1 a minute (!!!) because they are yet to get any funding to help defray the costs. I don't entirely understand how it works anyway, and whether I pay for incoming calls or the caller pays for them, I don't want to be billed £1 a minute to be asked if I am interested in a new kitchen (I'm not, I never will be). I will keep an eye on it, though, sounds like it's going in the right direction.

Do love how it said you don't need any special equipment, just a phone and a computer. Well that's one more phone than I have then! And you need either 2 phone lines or broadband, it wouldn't work with dial-up as the phone line is engaged when you are on the internet. So better than having to fork out for something really specialist, but you DO need certain equipment, best to be upfront about that.
