Hamill breaks hand but beats Jardine on Ultimate Fighter Finale | NBC-WKTV News Channel 2 - Utica News, Weather, Sports - | WKTV - Sports
It wasn’t pretty and he wasn’t happy with his performance, but Matt “The Hammer” Hamill overcame a broken hand, a visible staph infection and a poke in the eye to earn a three round majority decision over the “Dean of Mean” Keith Jardine Saturday night. The battle was the co-main event in the UFC’s Ultimate Fighter 11 finale in Las Vegas.
Hamill, the Utica based UFC Light Heavyweight, went into the ring with a discolored oval visible in the middle of his lower back. Hamill revealed after the fight that it was a staph infection and that the Nevada State Athletic Commission was aware of it. The NSAC had the infection examined by a doctor and cleared Hamill to compete.
The first round, of what was honored by the UFC as “Fight of the Night”, saw Hamill and Jardine on their feet slugging it out. Jardine’s kicks and hand speed won him the round. Unknown to the fans watching the nationally televised bout, Hamill broke his hand in that round.
In the second round, Hamill took Jardine to the mat and used his ground and pound to take the round. A bit past the halfway point in the second, during an exchange on their feet, Jardine threw an open hand left to Hamill’s head. Jardine’s fingers caught Hamill in his right eye and cut Matt in his forehead. Hamill fell to his knees and the fight was stopped. But, Hamill informed referee Herb Dean that he was ready to go on. Dean took a point away from Jardine because of the injury inflicted in the unintentional contact. Hamill inflicted a lot of damage to Jardine in that round, opening up two big cuts on Keith’s head.
In the third round, Hamill overcame the blurred vision and broken hand to register a takedown in what was a tight round. Hamill also landed a big knee to Jardine’s head late in the round. The fight was stopped once in the round to allow the doctor to check Jandine’s cuts, that were flowing. The judges scoring resulted in a majority decision victory for “The Hammer”.
In post fight interviews, Hamill joked that, after the second round poke in the eye, he thought he was going to be “…blind and deaf. I have enough handicaps.” Matt Hamill was born deaf and has won three NCAA National Div. III wrestling championships. He now is 10-2 in his MMA career and 9-2 in the UFC.
Matt Hamill will return to his home here, in the Utica area. He trains with MVMMA, operated by his trainer Duff Holmes.
