Growing Old in the Prison

Here's what they've started in one county in Florida. I don't know if other counties have followed suit, or have been doing this all along.

Sheriff Says Fees Are Comparable To Those Charged By State Prisons

Bradford County Sheriff Gordon Smith has implemented a new fee-based system that will charge inmates a $15 processing fee when admitted and required them to pay for some of medical costs for pre-existing or self-inflicted conditions.

Additional medical services such as visits to the nurse outside of normal sick calls will be $5 and visits to the physician of a non-emergency nature will cost $8. About 65 percent of the cost of any outside medical visits will be billed to the inmate.

No inmate will be denied services due to lack of funds and fee payments will be spread out over the length of incarceration. The county said the fees are comparable to those charged in state prisons.

By passing on the cost of these services, Smith said he is trying to reduce the burden to the taxpayer and make inmates more responsible for the consequences of their actions.

Money collected from the service fees will be utilized for maintenance and upkeep of the jail facility.

This is for jail inmates, but will help reduce taxpayers expense to upkeep it.

I think that ALL prison inmates should have their bank accounts garnished to pay for their upkeep, if they have one. Even their cars/material things, anything that is worthy.

It possibly would help the states and less burden on the taxpayers.

They pay for THEIR crimes. Not us.

And if they don't have money or whatever... not my problem.

We should allow drug companies to experiment on those criminals first with new drugs before they start with law abiding citizens. That would mean big savings for all of us - inmates get free drugs and we don't have to sacrifice ourselves too much.

I believe we debated that several months ago. But was called down, because "prisoners have no rights"....and are not allowed to sign up for drug testing. I felt that it was a good idea, but several members thought it wasn't.
