Group Plans Easter Egg Hunt Tailored To Deaf Children
On Saturday, a New Port Richey event will give deaf and hard of hearing children the opportunity to enjoy an Easter celebration just for them.
The third annual Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services of Florida Easter Egg Hunt will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park, 10500 Wilderness Park Road, New Port Richey.
This event will feature games and prizes, plus Easter egg coloring and craft table activities.
All of these events will be tailor-made for the deaf or hard of hearing child.
"We'll have sign language interpreters on hand, to tell the children what they're doing," said Honey Dalton, administrative assistant at Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services.
It was Dalton who originally conceptualized the egg hunt three years ago.
"I thought it would be something nice to do for children who couldn't hear," she said. "It's progressed every year."
Dalton said she had firsthand knowledge of how a hearing impairment can affect a person's enjoyment of special activities.
"When I wear ear plugs in the swimming pool, I can't hear what my daughter is saying to me," she said. "This gave me the idea that, at fun events like Easter egg hunts, kids who can't hear have no idea what's going on."
Aside from finding and coloring eggs, the children will play games such as ball, ring and bean bag tosses, along with the party favorite Twister.
Through playing these games, they also can accumulate points to win prizes that include tiny stuffed Easter bunnies.
Families that wish to participate in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services Easter Egg Hunt should register by calling (727) 853-1010 or visiting the agency's office at 8610 Galen Wilson Blvd., Port Richey.
