Fellow students, parents, faculty and staff were on hand for the groundbreaking of The Memphis Oral School For The Deaf in Germantown.

Instead of sign language, the school uses oral teaching methods to help kids learn. The ultimate goal, helping children become a successful part of the hearing and speaking world.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for these children in this building. It's perfect to talk and have a wonderful educational environment," says Cary McAlexander who's son will attend the school.

The non-profit organization has helped hundreds of hearing challenged children become successful, productive members of society.

Fucking audists , and with that sort of attitude .....they wonder why some Deaf folks are anti-oral? The attitude is that oral only can only make dhh kids become sucessful productive members of society, and those of us who Sign, can't ever hope to acheive those goals? Oralists......stop being so goddamn high and mighty.

deafdyke,

This article does not suggest that oral is better than sign. You are putting your own spin onto this.

I wonder if the 'No Child Left Behind' Act applies to private schools? I would love to see the test results from that school. I suspect the results would be quite revealing.

Did someone say Germantown? (off point)
That city has a really stupid rule....they don't allow fruit symbols on the storefronts. Apple store opened in Germantown without a fruit symbol on the front of the store. That's what I heard few years ago when they opened the store there.

Back to the point...
I do think it's pretty stupid to have a oral school for the deaf, unless it's for early age like toddler age...I don't mind. If it's for elementary to 12 grade, I'd say forget it. How embarrassing it is when a deaf person doesn't know sign language when they learned oral only. They're bringing back the old days that lot of people told me those horror stories, scary.
