I just spoke with the principal at the district which I sub at about possibly working with a deaf student full-time next year and I received a good recommendation for the job based on what I know of ASL and my goals of eventually working with deaf students as an educator. This student is the only deaf student within the district and he has bilateral CIs, knows English, and is fluent in ASL. I believe this is a good step towards my overall career goals and I would continue to work with this student as long as he remains at the district or until he graduates whichever comes first. He is self-contained and far as I know doesn't attend classes with the other students but rather spends his day in the special education/resource department.

They did not think he would stay at the district last year but the lady that worked with him was excellent appearently. My goals would be to ensure that he has full-access to the information presented to him and to build his understanding of that information. I wouldn't make choices for him, but to give him access to information so he can make choices on his own. I spoke with him briefly last year and he seems to be a good kid that just needs access.

I may have to go for some additional training and orientation closer to the new school year, but I don't mind. I just want to be ready and have a complete toolbox to use to help him succeed. I can also identify with him more as being HoH myself - but I also understand its likely a different ballgame wearing CIs versus being HoH. I just hope this works out, I really do.

Any thoughts or suggestions other than spending the summer building up my ASL fluency?
