The State School for the Deaf is bidding a heartfelt thank you and goodbye to Gordon Baker, department head for pupil personnel services and athletics and the former dean of students, upon his retirement from over 37 years of devoted service.

It may be that NYSSD has had no more knowledgeable and enthusiastic ambassador than Gordon Baker. He takes great pride in educating the community about our school’s impressive history and contributions. His understanding of and respect for the needs of deaf children and their families has been instrumental to helping thousands of New York’s students with deafness come to call Rome their second home. Gordon has taken a personal interest in every student, working to find individual avenues of success and remaining a steadfast source of encouragement throughout their school career. He is known for his gentleness, understanding, and unflagging positive attitude. Our colleague Gordon is a man of integrity, honor, and faith with whom it has been our privilege to work alongside.

— Cindy Killian, submitted by the Pupil Personnel Services Department of the School for the Deaf.
