It's just mind boggling that Rep. Trent Franks (R) of Arizona said that blacks were better off under slavery than in a legal system that allows legal abortions!!!

"n this country, we had slavery for God knows how long. And now we look back on it and we say 'How brave were they? What was the matter with them? You know, I can't believe, you know, four million slaves. This is incredible.' And we're right, we're right. We should look back on that with criticism. It is a crushing mark on America's soul.

"And yet today, half of all black children are aborted. Half of all black children are aborted. Far more of the African American community is being devastated by the policies of today than were being devastated by the policies of slavery."

The Washington Monthly

What kind of mentality is that?!?! Blacks now have the choice to decide on their own, they had NONE under slavery. Zero. They were forced to breed, not for themselves but for slaveowners to sell their babies for profit!

Ugh, there's bunches of dumbass politicians in US so you would have getting deal with it by not let others to win.

A post about a blog quoting yet another blogger. How reliable! Of course I have full confidence that Media Matters made every effort to insure that these statements were put into the proper context.

Don't base your opinion on a blog. Consider the source. This is from a website known for garbage. If this is true it will make credible news as well and at that point perhaps we will be able to determine the context in which it was said.

Did you watch the video? Guess not.

The video isn't captioned. This is a DEAF website. If you are going to cite videos on this website you should make sure they are captioned as well or that there is a COMPLETE transcript.

Not doing so seems a little audist

He just brought upon himself an onslought of NACCP criticism! :rofl2:

If this is his actual opinion he will be condemned by many....including me. I am going to wait for the rest of the story first

Where exactly did he say, " blacks better off under slavery"? I didn't read that in the quoted excerpt.

Granted, his claims that "half of all black children are aborted" should be substantiated before being spoken but I don't believe he was comparing the quality of life under slavery with today's life. It seems he was comparing the impact of abortion upon black families of today.

The analogy would be that black babies don't have any choice in their abortions today.

In the past, under slavery, parents had their children taken from them.

Today, under freedom, parents get rid of their children voluntarily through abortion.

From the perspective of an unborn black baby, life has not improved since the days of slavery in America. Either way, the baby loses.

I did find the last sentence that was clipped off the above excerpt:

"And I think, What does it take to get us to wake up?"

That makes it more clear as to what he was trying to compare.

He was comparing how Americans ignored the devastation of slavery to black families for so many years, and now are ignoring the devastation of abortion to black families.

I'm still looking for the full text.

A little bit more:

"It seems like humanity is very gifted at hiding from something that's obviously true. I mean in this country we had slavery for God knows how long. And now we look back on it and we say, 'Well how blind were they, what was the matter with them, you know, I can't believe, I mean four million, this is incredible,'" said Franks. "And we're right. We're right, we should look back on that with criticism. It is a crushing mark on America's soul. And yet today, half of all black children are aborted. Half of all black children are aborted. Far more black children, far more of the African-American community is being devastated by the policies of today, than were being devastated by the policies of slavery.

"And I think, what does it take to get us to wake up? Sometimes we're a little bit emphatic and sometimes we get angry and say things that we shouldn't say. And I apologize right here in front of everybody by saying things, especially if they're not true, that are intemperate. But I don't want to hide from the truth, I don't want to hide from being able to speak the truth intensely, with the hope that somehow it will resonate in the hearts of people who have the power to make a difference for the suffering of the innocent that are the victims of these bad policies."

I've searched around, and I can't find a captioned version, nor a transcript.

Yeah it's not even widely reported yet which leads me to believe it is a non-issue. Have to wait and see I guess. Media Matters, HuffPo and Salon put out so much tail chasing junk I don't even try to track it down......If it's a legitimate story it will make credible news.

I am not jumping to defend this story, because it appears to be a blatantly biased article. I am only making a point, however, that if the opinion is in favor of someone's viewpoint, they look the other way. Let's have more of those "Obama is not a native born American, so he can't be President" or "Obama gives the green light to honoring Muslim holidays, while blocking Christmas" articles.

When you drive down the middle, it is easy to see the bias coming from the shoulders of the road. Just saying.

Notice I didn't deny the allegation.....I criticized the source

You criticized the source as if the source is lying or biased - it isn't. He is actually saying that blacks were better off under slavery than today's legal system that allows blacks to have the freedom to decide, and that includes having the right to have abortion.

It's as if being slave is much better - I mean, 40 years of hard labor and abuse - always shackled to their owners who treat them as properties... wow, sounds better than giving blacks the freedom to make reproductive choices with their own bodies.

Nice try. Stupid.
