Google quits censoring search in China

ah, I see. well, they certainly not Google's gov't. But they can ban it. It's too bad. Hong Kong would be a good place, people in China can always go to Hong Kong to google, right?

right. The Chinese government can prevent the people from going to Hong Kong Google and they have already done so. But as you said - they can always go to Hong Kong to google for whatever they want to know.

Don't Be Evil :cool2:

it's google's slogan. Google said that to Apple and Microsoft too.

In 2006, when Google declared their self-censorship move into China, their "Don't be evil" motto was somewhat replaced with an "evil scale" balancing system, allowing smaller evils for a greater good, as explained by CEO Eric Schmidt at the time.

Google CEO on censoring: "We did an evil scale" | Developer World - InfoWorld

Makes sense. Now you can see that they are not censoring the search results any longer. But in order to do that, they had to make a big presence in the country first in order to make such a move.

I wonder how the Chinese government will respond.

I wonder how the Chinese government will respond.

let's see....
Early reports from China suggested that the government was already restricting access to Google's Hong Kong-based site, said Eddan Katz, international affairs director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

In January, Google announced that the company and at least 20 others were victims of a "highly sophisticated and targeted [hacking] attack" originating in China in mid-December, evidently to gain access to the e-mail accounts of Chinese human rights activists.

Briefly afterward, Google.cn was retrieving results for sensitive topics, including the 1989 crackdown at Tiananmen Square, the Dalai Lama and the banned Falun Gong spiritual movement. But about a day later, search results appeared to return to normal.

that's a hell of a response from Chinese government

Typical of the government. It's a terrible government to live under. Just look at what happened to Tibet.

They're wackos. They don't respect our laws so they get what they deserved.

But seriously, we have more freedom than ever. In the good old days, as recent as 1950's, we were taxed to death, literally... as much as 95%. We liked to treat blacks as a separate species. We didn't believe they deserve the equal treatment. We believed women are inferior and not fit for some positions. We had no regulations on pollution so we polluted a lot. We had children working for us. Our lifespan was shorter by a decade. Our freedom of speech was strongly regulated - in fact, a lot were not allowed. Our religious freedom wasn't great either - we were constantly discriminated based on religion.

Should I go on about our good old days?

So a mother got what she deserved when she came out of her house holding her baby and a sniper's bullet went through both her baby and the mother and she died on her front porch?

Then the father came running to the house when he and his older son was out hunting small game for dinner and finds his wife and baby dead on the front porch and ran up to them. Then the sniper shot him in the leg and he crawled into the house. The eldest son was captured outside in the woods near the house. The girls who was playing outside ran inside a shed after seeing their mom and baby fall from being shot.

The father inside the house couldn't get to his wife and baby to drag them inside the house, because everytime he tried, they started shooting at him.

Then a standoff ensued and his wife's body as well as the baby started decomposing on the third day and I think if memory serves me correctly was about 4 days.

Know what started all this? Some guy named Terry Kinnison lost in court after a dispute with Randy Weaver over some land and he called the FBI telling them lies about Randy and his family saying Randy wanted to kill the pope and all that nonsense.

So tell me again that the Weaver family got what they deserved.

Also tell me that the children who died at Waco got what they deserved.

actually, I believe it was businesses that did all that (except the tax part) , not the gov't. Business owners wanted to run however they wanted to run their business -- just like smoking in resturants today. Therefore, in some cases we had too much freedom. As the saying goes, Your Rights End Where Another’s Begin. but yeah, in some states, they did made it a law because that's what the society wanted which was stupid.

The gov't used the wrong approach on Waco. One can simply interpret the gov't as corrupt by the way they handled Waco.

Yes they did. The Sheriff was pissed off about the whole thing and he told the media that the whole thing was unnecessary to begin with. All the FBI had to do is ask the Sheriff to call in David Koresh and David is very friendly with the people in town, including the Sheriff. Neither side had any problems.

If the FBI wanted David Koresh, the Sheriff makes one phone call and then the Feds can arrest David at the Sheriff's office. Done deal.

They also could have nabbed him because David Koresh is an avid runner, he jogs ever other morning. All they had to do is wait for him to come out to do his usual jogging rounds and arrested him right then and there.

No, the Feds went in guns blazing with a hard on because they wanted action and they torched the compound because one of their own got killed in the raid.

Janet Reno got on with the Media and stated that the reason they did that was to "save the children". Yeah, right.

What's the common denominator for both Ruby Ridge and Waco? Guns. Frack the Constitution regarding the right to bear arms. The Feds went after them because they decided to criminalize both Waco and Randy Weaver just for having guns. So, you can see the end results of what happened to them.
