NEWTOWN, Conn.—A Lutheran charity group has sent about 10 golden retrievers to comfort the survivors of Friday's mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Lutheran Church Charities in Addison, Ill., sent the dogs on an 800-mile journey to respond to the disaster.

Lutheran Church Charities President Tim Hetzner told the Chicago Tribune that the dogs "are nonjudgmental. They are loving. They are accepting of anyone."

The dogs have traveled around the country to comfort people after disasters.

Really wonderful. I can't think of anything better than to put these dogs to work doing what they do best, comforting the hurting.

It is so nice to read a sweet story in all this sadness.

Yes it is nice to read a sweet story in all this sadness. I just hope that those that want nothing to do with dogs are not being pressured to pet them etc.

I did not see that happening on TV . I did see some kids petting the dogs and their parents said it was the first time they saw their child smile in days.

The idea is to make people feel better with therapy dogs, and the people are always asked if they welcome it. It's part of the training.

Were you severely mauled by a dog as a young child or something? I notice you keep making all these anti dog statements every time therapy dogs are mentioned.

Dogs love being around people all the time. Even I jog outside, and the dog sniffed and begged me to pet them when their masters holds their leash on.
