BillingsGazette.com :: Letter: Golden Pen Award: Deaf teen works hard, but still not rehired

Gazette readers, it is unbelievable that discrimination is still in our town. My son, Bradley, is profoundly deaf and cannot talk. A lot of people in Billings know him. My son does all the things that your kids do. But he cannot get the job that he has done before. It seems that being deaf is the reason that he cannot resume work at a job that he has proved that he can do.

Being a parent who has tried so hard to make sure that his son does not feel the effects of discrimination in his community is hard and frustrating. Bradley drives, has a checking account, shops at the mall.

No one else in our family is deaf, but we feel that we are part of a bigger family. Just when are the deaf going to be accepted? We see struggles of the deaf. I cannot believe that our town would turn away from the hurt and frustration of all our disabled. People who are deaf and blind are part of our town and community. We see them every day.

By the way, Bradley had to calm his dad down. He said that that is the way he will have live for the rest of his life. What a shame.
