Welcome To The Sunday Vision online: Uganda's leading weekly
AS members of the Lira Deaf Association, we would like to ask the local government as well as the NGOs in Lira District to involve deaf persons in the district’s development programmes.
We have trained sign language interpreters and they are ready to give of their skills to help bridge the gap between the deaf people and the hearing community.
The role of sign language interpreters has been recognised at national level as stipulated in the Persons with Disability Act 2006 clause 21 (a) which states that: “It shall be the duty of the responsible government authority to promote the rights of persons with disabilities to access information through the development and use of sign language, tactile, sign language interpreters, in all public institutions and at public functions.”
