MOSCOW - A five-year-old Russian girl has been placed in state custody after being found alone in an apartment filled with cats and dogs and imitating the animals' behaviour.

Police in the Transbaikal region of Siberia said Wednesday that the girl was kept shut up with the animals in a filthy apartment in the regional capital of Chita, where she lived with relatives, including her father and grandparents.

Larisa Popova, head of the children's affairs unit at the local police precinct, told state-run Rossiya television that the girl had developed feral characteristics.

"The child lived in unsanitary conditions. There was a horrible stench," Popova said. "There were many animals - both dogs and cats. In all probability, the girl lived with and was raised by these animals."

Police said the girl understands Russian but rarely speaks and they are gathering evidence to support neglect charges.

Nina Yemelyanova, head of the reception department at a children's home where the girl has been placed, said the child appears to mimic the behaviour of animals.

"Today, when I left the room, she jumped up to the door and started to bark," Yemelyanova told Rossiya television. "And she does not know how to behave at the table - when she eats, the tries to put the spoon aside and lap from the dish."

Regional police said water, heat and gas to the apartment had long since been shut off for non-payment.

The ITAR-Tass news agency cited the girl's mother as saying the child's father had taken her away without her permission when she was 2 1/2 years old. But the father claimed his mother-in-law had asked him to take the child because the mother was not taking proper care of her, the news agency quoted regional police spokesman Yegor Markov as saying.

Markov said the father could be charged with neglect of a minor, which carries a prison sentence of up to three years.

Chita is 4,700 kilometres east of Moscow.

Neglected Russian girl found mimicking cats and dogs; father faces charges

So sad. :( The poor little girl. She probably thinks she is a dog or a cat. There is so much disturbing news about how parents are raising their children in the news today. It's horrible. :(

OMG :shock: I hope they will find a nice family to raise that poor little girl!!!!!!!! She deserves so much love right now!!!!

I feel awful just reading this...
 
Wow so fucked up I'm glad they removed her out of this place...she doesnt deserve this as well as the dogs and the cats too who dont seem to get those proper care either. The kid and the animals seems to be in alot of abuse from those people. :mad:

Sadly she will probably linger in 'foster care' for the rest of her life... it will take a REALLY special family/person to raise a poor baby like that... it breaks my heart to read this... I just don't understand some people...
 
I wonder if the girl suffered from any malnourishment having to compete for food and water with the rest of the animals. Due to animal behaviors, she may have fallen into the pack order and was forced to eat the leftovers from each meal or risk being bitten. Poor thing. I wonder what finally tipped the police off about the girl?
 
I'm pretty sure about that Dixie! If she's probably eating food off the ground, I don't even want to think about what they gave her to eat!!!! :(

I'm also afraid she will be in foster family (if not many due to her "condition") for a great deal of her life...

This is just so sad to read! I still feel terrible about it...
 
Yes I agree. I do know that the girl that was locked in a bathroom for the first 10 years of her life never fully developed human behaviors and is now living in a group home. She never learned language only a few words. If I recall she was chained to the toilet and was forced to drink out of the toilet for water and they fed her only once a day - like a dog.
 
That is so sad and it is disturbing news to read. :(

I do remember watching a documentary on TV few years ago. It was about a man, when he was a boy, he was forced to live in a chicken coop. It was somewhere in Pacific Island. Perhaps I would find a link about it and set up a new thread about this story in few days later.

There was another girl in Russia that had alcoholics for parents and when she was three they threw her out of the house and she was forced to live in the yard with the dogs. The dogs took her in and kept her warm during the winter, and the girl took on behaviors and characteristics of the dogs, and she wasn't discovered until she was about 9 I think. I saw something about it on Animal Planet once.
