allAfrica.com: Ghana: Deaf And Dumb Association Cries Foul

THE GREATER Accra Regional President of the Ghana Deaf and Dumb Association, Mr. George Tagoe, has decried the behaviour of authority in the treatment of members of the Association.

He noted that the deaf and dump had been denied access to sign language instructors, thereby rendering them incapable of doing anything to help the society.

Mr. Tagoe, who was speaking to The Chronicle through sign language assistant, bemoaned how they had been made hollow by the inaction of authority to provide them with sign language personnel.

He asked whether being born deaf and dump was a sin, and appealed to the authorities to come to their aid.

Mr. Tagoe pleaded for sign language instructors to be on television, especially during the reading of the news to enable them follow government policies and other issues affecting the country and the world at large.

He was also unhappy with journalists who always shunned them at functions to interview the blind as if they had no problems to share with society.

Mr. Tagoe said due to this inhospitable situation, the deaf and dumb could not access the National Health Insurance Scheme, the Poverty Alleviation Strategy or any other initiatives being implemented by government for the people to benefit from.

He said his members were also finding it difficult to be part and parcel of the recently inaugurated Youth Employment Programme, as no sign language personnel were attached to the programme for their benefit.

Mr. Tagoe therefore suggested the training of more sign language personnel at the University of Education, Winneba, to help solve the situation.
