The Georgia School for the Deaf broke ground Monday on a $1.9 million gym in a ceremony attended by Kathy Cox, state school superintendent.

“This is one of the most important milestones in the history of our school,” said Director Lee Shiver. “And, to have someone (Kathy Cox) who is both professionally and personally involved in your school’s success is very rare.”

It took the school three years to turn the dream of this new facility into a reality. School officials estimate the project could be completed as early as next February.

“Today is a day we celebrate dreaming big,” said Cox. “For students to be successful, it’s not just about the academics, it’s about the whole experience in school.”

Cox recently won $1 million dollars on the Fox TV show “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” She is donating the money to three state-run schools — Georgia Academy for the Blind in Macon, Atlanta Area School for the Deaf in Clarkston and Georgia School for the Deaf in Cave Spring.

Before the groundbreaking Cox described her plans for putting the money she won into action. She wants to start a “Go For It” foundation, which would funnel money into “robust athletic and art programs” at the three schools.

The foundation would also create scholarships for students who “go for it”, by graduating from high school and applying for college.

“I still have a lot of details to work out with the money, but a part of it is going to be about getting your diploma, so go ahead and start working on that now,” Cox told an assembly full of GSD students.

“Many times, kids do thrive when they stay in their home schools, but I also know we still need a GSD… there is something special about being able to come to school and not be different,” Cox said after the groundbreaking ceremony.

Very thoughtful for the state school superintendent to donate the $1-million to the two deaf schools and the blind school.

Where was Dr. Cynthia Ashby, the state deaf schools director? She should have been there with her boss! Has she distanced from the deaf community, after the Dr. Jane Fernandes protest at Gallaudet?
