Lawn Tennis Association GB Deaf Women Maintain Perfect Record

The Great Britain Women's Deaf Tennis Team secured their second 3-0 win in three days on Monday in Munich, Germany, as they continued their defence of the Maere Cup, the Fed Cup of deaf tennis, with a resounding success over Turkey, the second of their three round robin pool opponents.

Alex Simmons (Oxfordshire) got the ball rolling for Great Britain as she eased past Turkey's Gizem Demir 6-0, 6-1, while three-time National Champion Catherine Graham (Lincolnshire) put the tie beyond doubt after defeating Asuman Saki without dropping a game.

Alex Simmons then teamed up with twin sister Beth to beat Demir and Saki 6-1, 6-0 in the dead doubles rubber.

Graham and the Simmons sisters now face a tough third and final round-robin pool match on Tuesday against a talented Chinese Taipei team.

The Dresse and Maere Cups are contested on a four year-cycle and Graham and the Simmons sister formed three-quarters of the team that beat Germany and Austria to the Maere Cup in Poertschach, Austria in 2003.

Eight nations are contesting the Maere Cup this year, with host nation Germany and Italy, both drawn in the other round robin pool, expected to be Great Britain's strongest challengers.

Tuesday's fourth day of play in Munich will also see the Great Britain Men's Team resume their challenge in the Dresse Cup, the Davis Cup of deaf tennis, after a day off on Monday.

Having beaten China 2-1 and the United States 3-0, seven-time National Champion Peter Willcox (Tiverton, Devon), former National Champions Anthony Sinclair (Northern Ireland) and Daniel Tunstall (Scotland) and 2006 National Championships runner-up Lewis Fletcher (Surrey) face Japan in another challenging third and final round robin poot tie.

Willcox, Tunstall and Fletcher were all in the Great Britain Men's Team that finished as runners-up to top seeds Germany in the Dresse Cup in Poertschach in 2003.

Fifteen nations are contesting the Dresse Cup this year, with Austria, Australia, France and Germany joining Great Britain among the leading contenders.

The 2007 Dresse and Maere Cups continues until Saturday 28 July.
