Gang Members Face Trial For Stabbing Deaf Man - FOX6 San Diego

Two 18-year-old reputed gang members accused of taking part in a fight that resulted in the stabbing of a deaf man in Carlsbad were ordered Tuesday to stand trial.

Both Jesus Hernandez and Edgar Rendon Zepeda should be tried for attempted murder for the Dec. 6 assault on Joseph Torres at the intersection of Harding Street and Palm Avenue, Judge Timothy Casserly said.

Zepeda also faces an assault charge.

Carlsbad police Detective Bryan Hargett testified that Torres has been hearing-impaired most of his life and was unable to hear a warning yelled by his cousin that one of the men confronting him had a knife.

Torres and his cousin had entered the area -- a neighborhood claimed as turf by Carlsbad's lone gang -- to buy a weight bench advertised on Craig's List, but were lost, Hargett said.

The victim reported that when he felt a rock strike his car, he got out and confronted two teenagers, resulting in a quick fight, the detective said.

According to Hargett, the victim and cousin bought the weight bench and returned to the scene of the altercation to call police, but before officers arrived, the men were confronted by as many as five gang members, including the defendants.

"Joseph said a fight happened," Hargett testified. "He thought he was being punched, but it didn't feel like a normal punch. It hurt more."

Torres was hospitalized with four stab wounds that took about 200 staples to close, the detective said.

When the defendants were arrested on Dec. 13, both admitted to taking part in the stabbing.

Zepeda said "he saw Hernandez stab Joseph" and admitted pushing Torres into bushes, Hargett testified.

Hernandez said he pulled the knife hoping "to scare them away" but since he'd been drinking, was all "fired up and feeling like a big man," according to Hargett.

Judge Timothy Casserly scheduled a trial for April 9. A juvenile is also being held in connection with the case.

Oh, geez... Don't those teens get a grip on themselves!?

Anyway, my prayers and thoughts go out to Joseph Torres... I feel bad for him...

The gangs war will never end. They been doing this for years. They will never change.
