Opponents of newly named Gallaudet University President Jane Fernandes are asking Congress to step into the controversy surrounding her appointment.

Students at the school for the deaf have been leading protests for the past week since Fernandes was named to succeed I. King Jordan.

They say the search process was not fair and didn't consider diverse candidates.

Fernandes says she is at the center of a cultural debate in the deaf community.

She believes she's resented because she was born deaf but did not learn sign language until she was in her 20's.

A group of students, faculty and alumni have sent letters to every member of Congress, asking for help to resolve "the chaos and unrest."

They want Congress to get the school to reopen the search and make sure that there will be no reprisals against protesters.

They need to drop the crap about "Deaf Pride".

I agree 100%. Enough is enough! Sour grapes is going to make the entire deaf community look bad!

Anyone who is still spouting the "not Deaf enough" propoganda clearly isn't involved in the protests, or doesn't understand the meaning for them.

Open letter to JKF from FSSA

What is point ?? King Jordan learned signed language at 26 years old when he had an accident motorcycle. He lost his hearing.

However, Gallaudent students need to go back to their classroom to finish their term paper and study final exam for their graduation.

They need to grow up and go back to classroom and dorm. No more parties! :pissed: It makes other parents become scare to sending their children to Gallaudet this fall.

I heard some of senior student’s guardian counselors and parents feel not comfortable to send the senior students to enroll Gally this fall. They think, those students are bunches of immature as animals. Jeeze !! Very bad reputation right now !!
