Opponents of newly named Gallaudet University President Jane Fernandes are asking Congress to step into the controversy surrounding her appointment.
Students at the school for the deaf have been leading protests for the past week since Fernandes was named to succeed I. King Jordan.
They say the search process was not fair and didn't consider diverse candidates.
Fernandes says she is at the center of a cultural debate in the deaf community.
She believes she's resented because she was born deaf but did not learn sign language until she was in her 20's.
A group of students, faculty and alumni have sent letters to every member of Congress, asking for help to resolve "the chaos and unrest."
They want Congress to get the school to reopen the search and make sure that there will be no reprisals against protesters.

It makes other parents become scare to sending their children to Gallaudet this fall.
