Ms. Celia May Baldwin, interim chair of the Gallaudet University Board of Trustees, announced the appointments of two new members: Ms. Cheryl Heppner and Ms. Pamela Lloyd. The selection of the new members received the unanimous approval of the Trustees at their meeting February 2006 meeting.
The Board also passed a resolution honoring Dr. Glenn B. Anderson for his many years of outstanding service as a member of the Board, including as its chair from 1994 until his resignation in 2005.
Ms. Heppner is the Executive Director of the Northern Virginia Resource Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons, an organization devoted to the empowerment of deaf and hard of individuals and their families through education, advocacy, and community involvement. Prior to her current position, she was an outreach specialist for the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, a public relations consultant, and an instructor at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia. She serves as chair of the national Movie Access Coalition, a partnership among organizations working for captioning of movies shown in public theaters. Ms. Heppner has been a member of numerous national, state, regional, and local advocacy organizations working to raise public awareness and influence policy and legislation on issues affecting deaf and hard of hearing persons and their families. Ms. Heppner earned a degree in journalism from Penn State University.
Ms. Lloyd is the Program Administrator of Telecommunications Access of North Carolina. In this capacity she supervises three programs: Relay Services, Emergency Alert and Responsiveness Services, and the Telecommunication Equipment Distribution Program. From 1993-1997 she served as President of the National Black Deaf Advocates, following a term as President of the New York City Black Deaf Advocates and as an active member of both the Atlanta Black Deaf Advocates and the Rochester Black Deaf Advocates. Ms. Lloyd obtained a BA degree in Social Work from the Rochester Institute of Technology and a MA degree in Deafness Rehabilitation from New York University. She also completed the Deafness Rehabilitation Administrative post-master’s degree program at Sand Diego State University. She is currently a member of the National Black Deaf Advocates Board and of the National Association of the Deaf Fulton Steering Committee. Ms. Lloyd is a native of New York City.
Ms. Heppner and Ms. Lloyd will attend their first Board of Trustees meeting in October 2006. “We are delighted that Ms. Heppner and Ms. Lloyd are joining the University’s Board of Trustees. Both bring a depth of knowledge and experience that will greatly benefit Gallaudet for many years to come,” said Interim Board Chair Celia May Baldwin.
Dr. Glenn B. Anderson, Gallaudet Class of 1968, was recognized by the Board of Trustees with a formal resolution honoring him for his years of service to the University as both a member and chair of the Board from 1989 to 2005. Dr. Anderson is a professor and director of training at the Research and Training Center for Persons who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing at the University of Arkansas. The Board’s resolution acknowledges that Dr. Anderson “brought to the Board a broad understanding of issues in higher education, dedication to addressing diversity issues, commitment to strengthening undergraduate education, excellence in research and scholarship, outstanding leadership qualities, and strong ties with constituencies both on and off campus…”
Ms. Baldwin and the Board are tremendously grateful to Dr. Glenn Anderson for his many years of dedicated service, particularly for his exceptional leadership as chair. We wish him great happiness and continued success.”
