Gallaudet alumni pitch in at protest - Examiner.com

Alumni of Gallaudet University gathered Friday at the Washington campus in support of protesters who are asking the president-designate to resign, while protesters and faculty appealed to the university's board of trustees to resolve the dispute.

Some alumni came from around the country despite the school's postponement of homecoming this week. Many support the faculty and students who are demanding that Jane K. Fernandes step down and the presidential search be reopened.

Fernandes was selected by the board of trustees in May and is scheduled to replace current president I. King Jordan in January.

A group of faculty and protesters wrote a letter Friday to the board of trustees chair, Brenda Jo Brueggemann, asking the board to help resolve the 10-day standoff and accusing Brueggemann of not allowing the board to meet.

"In all these days and nights, you and the members of the Board of Trustees have been absent, apparently going about your usual business, attending conferences, and ignoring the dire plight of Gallaudet University," read the open letter signed by the "Stakeholders United for Gallaudet."

A document on Gallaudet's Web site about the values of "shared governance" states the board of trustees "has the fundamental responsibility and the ultimate authority for the institution's legal, fiscal, academic and operational well being."

However, the board of trustees has made statements that they are not responsible for the day-to-day operations of the university.

In an interview, Fernandes responded to the leak of a private letter she wrote to the board of trustees, excerpts of which ran in the Washington Post Thursday. Fernandes said she "almost fainted" and walked into Jordan's office out of breath.

"I'm appalled, and I'm stunned, and I'm hurt," Fernandes said of the leak. "I never thought I would see this kind of reaction from my own deaf people against me and Dr. Jordan. What's in the nature of this community that drives them to tear down their leader?"

Protestors have blocked campus gates and demonstrated for the past 10 days. Last Friday, police arrested 133 people who were limiting access to the Northeast campus.

On Saturday morning, protestors plan a march from the Gallaudet campus to the U.S. Capitol.
