Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is working on legislation that would pressure cable and satellite TV providers to allow their customers to pick and choose the channels they pay for. Consumers have long complained about the rising costs of cable TV packages and having to pay for dozens or even hundreds of channels just to gain access to the few that they watch. But McCain's legislation, which he is expected to introduce in the coming days, will likely face furious opposition from both the TV broadcasters and cable providers.

The platonic ideal of television's future is a la carte consumption: the ability to pay only for the channels you want. It's a dream that everyone from Apple to Intel has reportedly pursued, and one that every half-sentient cable customer desires. But maybe the question isn't can—or will—this happen some day. What we should really be asking is: when it does happen, what will it cost us?

The Future of TV May Not Be Worth It

My TWC bill is high! I never used Music TV channels, Kid channels and other channels. I always favored local tv channels, Lifetime, Hallmark, sports package channels.

I can't wait to get update Apple TV or iTV. see link about Apple Tv concept.

I want newer Apple TV device which not needed cable set-up box.

What is your opinion about future of a la carte channels. Reduce cable bill? But ESPN package is expensive.

I like McCain's idea and I support his proposal.

Yes, I don't need stupid hundreds of TV channels.

I usually watch channels
Spike TV
MTV
Discovery Channel
A&E
TruTv
Nat Geo Channel
BBC America
FX
HBO
Showtime
Cinemax
Travel Channel

Suppose if each channel costs $5 per month (premium channels like HBO, Showtime cost much more), then you would have to pay at least $70 for 12 channels of your preference. So is it worth it?

No, $70 for 12 channels are expensive - our Directv package contain 250 channels for $70 per month + $12 per month for HBO + $11 per month for Showtime.

MTV will likely cost at 99 cents per month or Viacom could go bankrupt.

Directv said ESPN, Disney, NBC Sports, Fox Sports that cost much of their money.

HBO and Showtime have more than 1 channel - HBO has 7 and Showtime has 8.

So my point is that a package is cheaper than total charges for the channels of your choice. Easily set up your favorite channels in your STB's TV guide so you will not see other channels you don't want to see.

In my area, some towns regulate cable and only pay a fraction of the cost. For other towns, cable is triple the amount.

I dumped it. And, I'm looking for ways to dump the high internet cost as well.

That's why I bought a bundle which includes cable, internet and phone services. It saves me about $30 per month. If I subscribe to cable only through one company and to internet through the same company or another company, it would cost me much more.

And if you debundle your television from your internet, guess what? Your internet costs skyrocket. You just can't win.
