Actually, what you said is not true about pit bulls being not children friendly. (Again this is Myth) Please re-read my post in the beginning. I'm not saying that everyone should get a pit bull.. Or this is the perfect pet for everyone. I'm trying to educate the public since I did research on it for years and years. I used to be involved in rescue org. Pit bulls are not dangerous to children; however, there have been a case where kid has been mauled by a pit. This happen often by an owner who is ignorant and didn't take the responsible for the safety of their dogs. It applies to every breed, Fila Braseliero, Cane Corso, Labs, Golden Retreiver, Cocker Spaniels, Tosa Inu, pomerinrians, chihuahua, boxers, etc.

One Fact I ought tell you.. All dogs have teeth, they can harm or kill a child. It can be any kind of dog not just pit! It is parents' responsible to ensure that their children are at the safe side. NO parents should ever let their kids be alone with ANY dogs! When your kids are with someone's dog, always supervior your kids and their dogs. You need to be a good observant and able to read the dog's body language. Whether this dog is comfortable with your kids or not. I don't care how old the kids are or how much do they trust their dogs or friend's dogs. This is a big "NO NO NO"! Never leave your kids alone with a dog ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm sorry to say that, there are too many accidents already...(Regardless of what breed it is)

One incident with a young kid being bitten on his face from a family dog, an english mastiff. The parents were shocked about it and decided to euthanzie the dog. They brought the mastiff in and to have it put down. The Veterinrian found a huge pencil inside the dog's ear. Whose fault was that? The parents, the kid, or the dog? My opinion, its the parents' fault for not supervior their own kid! Of course, the dog will bite after a kid poke a pencil inside the ear! Who wouldn't?

Yes, you are exactly right..I have said before and i have said it many times until im blue in the face.....all dogs, no matter what breeds, pure breds, or just plain mutts DO bite! I was bitten when i was 3 years by a chihuhua (spell?) on the chin which required emergency room treatment and some stitches cuz i did hurt the dog somehow,not intentionally of course..and my brother and i were chased and got bitten by some damn large mutt of a dog on our butts when we were kids, and i got bitten again later in life by a German Shepard on the butt again..geez. Our vet even told us that he rather handle pitbulls than French poodles cuz they bite! lol! So really not only pitbulls are dangerous, all dogs can be dangerous if provoked or something.
You need to read Banjo's post too as he is so right about certain breeds of dogs too...I remember the news last year about an old lady in Tulsa who got attacked by her daughter's Boston Terrier..she was viciously attacked by the dog that she had to be hospitalized for her severe injuries..her daughter had to put the dog down..how sad!
 
That must be awful to get bit on the butt twice! When i was younger, I didn't know any better. I picked up a shih tzu puppy and held the dog too close. It snapped my chest and had to go to the hospital to clean the wound. After that I have learned not to held them too hard! :)
 
i have had dog bite me few times...

one was a mix breed.. small dog. can't remember name my mom said mostly likely to be a mutt dog.. but small dog.

Another dog was doberman.. did I whine and beg my mom to give dog up ? NO I let our dogs to know that WE are the dominate not the dog!.. one of our dog we almost had to put him to sleep due of being very stubborn and very bossy so We put him out in dog yard, with his own dog house, and a blanket inside doghouse.. We bring him food and water. we let him know who's the boss not you or so.. so forth.. few weeks.. He start to listen better and learned.. then we let him in house. he learned not to lay on couch, bed etc.. because we told him no! he listen.. so therefore If we were train our dogs PROPERLY.. we wouldn't have had any problems...

I have previously own 6 dobermans, 1 american staffordshire, and Presently own mutt-- Pitbull, rottweiler and black lab!

this just remind me something, but my boxes are packed due of moving this summer so as soon we finally settle if this topic is still OPEN I will scan few pictures of Diva with my kids!

You have done the right thing. You have to set up a boundary where a dog has to listen to you. This is the proper way to show who's the alpha, but sad not so many people do this. I forbid for my dogs to sleep on the couch and bed. It is not because I don't love them. If I allow this, I'm encouraging them to take over my place. They have their own crates and a big sofa. Before I feed my dogs, they always sit polite and wait for me to put the plate down. I will say "eat," they will eat their food. They know a thousand commands only in german. One of them has a TDI(a thearpy dog) SchH III, and IPO III. Two others have a BH title, CGC,and SchH I.
