Hi to all, I am a retiree and live in MN but don't like its winters, so I am thinking of moving back to FL. I am looking for a friendly deaf community that welcomes new deaf residents. I am not interested in athletics or large group activities. I prefer smaller deaf chat groups, playing cards and/or board games, etc. Some of the deaf groups in FL are clannish. I lived in Melbourne which I loved but the deaf residents there are unfriendly. They told me I was too old and they did not know me. There was a smaller group there, but they tried to force religion on me.
I also lived in Harbor Hills, a gated community in Lady Lake, which I loved. Most of the deaf residents there live in The Villages where residents from out of the Villages cannot participate in the Villages's own activities except those sponsored by the deaf residents. Most of these events are sports-oriented. I am not sure if they have any smaller groups such as deaf coffee chats, card games, etc. Also, the snowbird season there is horrible. Major health care is not available there; the patient needing major care would have to go to Tampa, MIami, etc, and I am 85, so I must be realistic even though I am in great shape for my age but who knows what will happen next year or even tomorrow?
I am wondering about Jacksonville. St. Augustine, Clearwater, etc. Your feedback will be much appreciated. Where would YOU live and why?
