Is it unusual for one to loose bass frequencies first? I was told most people loose their high end first.

Yep

If you have a high frequency hearing lost or losing your hearing. You will lose the bass first. The lower the tones the less you will hear.

Conductive hearing loss , rather than SNHL is where you lose the bass.
