Jack Freeman Scholarship applications, available at Danville High School for 2006, should be postmarked by March 31 to Wilderness Trace Community Foundation, 114 S. Fourth St., Danville, Ky. 40422.

Established for high school graduates from Danville High School, Boyle County High School, and Kentucky School for the Deaf, the scholarship will be available in 2006 to a senior from Danville High School. In 2007, a Boyle County High School senior will be named, and in 2008, a Kentucky School for the Deaf senior will be awarded.

The minimum award will be $1,000 per year, renewable for three years for a total of at least $4,000.

As specified in Dr. Freeman's trust, financial need will be a key selection factor. Eligible candidates must provide a copy of their Student Aid Report furnished by the U.S. Department of Education to indicate expected family contribution toward a college education, must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA, demonstrate academic proficiency with an official copy of their most recent academic transcript, provide a copy of ACT or SAT scores, write a 150-word essay, provide a copy of their letter of acceptance to the college or university of their choice, and provide three letters of recommendation.

Dr. Jack Freeman, a 1953 graduate of Danville High School, attended the University of Kentucky and played under Coach Bear Bryant on a full football scholarship. Contributions made during "Jack Freeman Day" in Danville paid for his education at Vanderbilt University Medical School. Freeman was board-certified in pathology in 1965 and practiced as owner of Nashville Pathology Associates until his retirement in 1988. He died in Nashville of a heart attack at the age of 69 on Dec. 28, 2003.

Laura Freeman, Dr. Freeman's wife, said, "Jack was never afraid of hard work, always had the determination to succeed and, thanks to the Danville community, his education at Vanderbilt Medical School was made possible. He wanted to give this gift to Danville in appreciation of the great support Danville always gave him. I'm so glad to see the scholarship in place, and I know Jack would be glad, too."

The Jack Freeman Scholarship award recipient will be announced in May.
