A Fayetteville teen accused of trying to blow up his deaf adoptive father's house while the man slept is scheduled to appear in court today.
Seville B. Brown, now 18, has been in Franklin County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail since he allegedly placed aerosol spray paint cans in the kitchen oven and an outdoor barbecue grill and lit both on Easter Sunday, April 4.
Then 17, Brown was charged as an adult with attempted criminal homicide, arson, reckless endangerment, aggravated assault, causing or risking a catastrophe and criminal mischief.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. today in Franklin County Central Court.
Police allege in charging documents that Brown placed six aerosol cans in the kitchen stove. Then he put two more and a fire extinguisher inside an outdoor barbecue grill, police said, before turning on both and heading to his basement bedroom.
Daniel Gelwicks, Brown's adoptive father, was reportedly asleep in his own bedroom at the time. Legally deaf, Gelwicks said he was awakened by the smell of burning plastic. He was able to put out the fire and prevent an explosion.
According to charging documents, Brown initially told his father and police that someone else had placed the cans in the oven and left a threatening note. Later, he allegedly told investigators that he was responsible.
Brown was arraigned on May 5 before Magisterial District Judge Todd Williams. Initially scheduled for April 13, his preliminary hearing was continued twice, according to court records.
