RAWALPINDI, Pakistan — Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday in a homicide attack that also killed at least 20 others at a campaign rally.

Bhutto was shot in the neck and chest as she was entering her vehicle, and then the bomber blew himself up, FOX News has confirmed.

The former prime minister died in Rawalpindi General Hospital, where she had been rushed to surgery. She was 54.

"At 6:16 p.m. she expired," said Wasif Ali Khan, a member of Bhutto's party who was at the hospital.

Her supporters at the hospital began chanting "Dog, Musharraf, dog," referring to Pakistan's president, Pervez Musharraf.

Some of them smashed the glass door at the main entrance of the emergency unit, others burst into tears. Top party leaders were outside the hospital, crying.

One man with a flag of Pakistan People's Party tied around his head was beating his chest.

Sen. Babar Awan, Bhutto's lawyer, said, "The surgeons confirmed that she has been martyred."

This deeply shocked and saddened me.

I have so much respect for her. I was truly hoping that she would bring positive reforms to Pakistan :(

I wonder what will become of elections on January 8.

May her legacy continues - may it not be stopped - then she will have truly won in the end.

I highly doubt this. I strongly supsect it is the right wing Taliban & fanatics who are behind this as they have so much to lose if Bhutto was in power as Bhutto would have shut them down or reduce their power.

I just cannot fathom a murder of a woman and mother! This makes my blood boil.
 
TV is showing live and video of her being carried in her casket; it's very weird.

No. Bhutto has been a strong supporter of the Taliban and even though she decried their terrorist activities, her position didn't change. It may have been a lone fanatic, but it is much, much more likely that Musharraf is behind it in some way as he had a great deal to lose (and very soon) if she were elected.

Sharif (the former PM) is boycotting the elections because he blames Musharraf for the problems in Pakistan -- although he didn't come right out and accuse him of the assassination -- but of course the Bush administration continues to support Musharraf.

It's just horrifying. All steps back, no steps forward there.
 
It's a mess, that is for sure.

I rank her up there with Indira Gandhi.

She supported Taliban????? I talked to a Pakistani friend earlier today and asked him about this incident. He said that his family and friends all believe it is done by a either right wing Taliban or fanatic fundamentalist. This is a message to say that democracy is not the way to do it in Pakistan.

Where did you find evidence that she actually supports Taliban? :confused:

The Taliban took power in Kabul in September 1996. It was during Bhutto's rule that the Taliban gained prominence in Afghanistan. She viewed the Taliban as a group that could stabilize Afghanistan and enable trade access to the Central Asian republics, according to author Stephen Coll.[13] He claims that her government provided military and financial support for the Taliban, even sending a small unit of the Pakistani army into Afghanistan.

More recently, she took an anti-Taliban stance, and condemned terrorist acts committed by the Taliban and their supporters.

This last statement is a bit misleading; the second part is correct in that she has spoken out against the terrorist acts by the Taliban but she never officially changed her position on the political group.

Of course a fanatical extremist could be from anywhere, even if officially the party condemns the assassination, as Mehsud (Taliban leader) has done. It was a fanatical Jew who assassinated Yitzhak Rabin after all.
 
I just knew one day she be killed because they don't really want a woman to be in power as a prime minister to run the country. So, in their country it belong to men world over there. Which is a very sad thing they don't want to change and let the women take over. Men in their countries have done nothing but abused their women which is such a terrible thing.

You took right out of my mouth and that is exactly what happen to women all over the world. Men think that the men have more power to control women and abuse them and discriminate against women. It happen many times on many First Nations Reservations where white and native men abuse women, plus young girls, too. I am very happy and proud of Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto to take the stand on her right to have democracy. She had taken the position of Prime Minister in the past twice and was going to go for election on January 8 to become a Prime Minister again. That take a lot of guts what she had done in the past and before her death. I believe there is a lack of security to protect her. She was fighting for the rights in Pakistani and oust the military rules. That was a very dangerous thing for her to go through this, but somebody got to do it to protect her country just like in Tibet when the monks try to oust the military rule. They all want to have democracy in their countries. So rest in peace because I respect her very much and admire her for what she was trying to help her country. She was a warrior to our native women's eyes. :cool:

The news media is now stating that it was the Taliban and Al-Qaida that are responsible for her assassination.
