Hampshire's police force has been commended for its work with people who are deaf and hard of hearing.

The force has been awarded a prestigious Platinum Award for outstanding equality achievement, particularly for work through the Police Link Officers for Deaf People (PLOD) scheme and the 999 emergency text service.

The PLOD scheme was set up in Hampshire in 1999.

The link officers include manager Sergeant Glen Barham, who was awarded an MBE in recognition of his achievements.

His team members can all communicate using sign language and work to ensure people with hearing problems have the same access to the police.

In Hampshire, people are able to text the emergency services for assistance.

Deaf people and those with speech impairment can contact police, ambulance, fire, and coastguard by texting one number.

The texts go through to the police control room at Netley and information is passed on to other emergency services.

Hampshire Constabulary's director of personnel, Maureen Adamson, said: 'We are very proud of our officers.'

The award was given to the force by the Southampton Centre for Independent Living organisation.
