Dont forget about Subaru. They use H4 and H6 too.
My dream is to tear down a 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder engine.

Subaru H6 w/ chain timings looks easy than Porsche H6...you just need few special tools and hand tools. Porsche engines you have good lot of jewel tools.
Not surprised about that and I stay avoid from the Euro cars as I can.
Then scrap them?![]()
I did head works last 2 weeks ago, the cylinder heads in a 2004 MBZ CLK 550 AMG, got valve leaks when my mechanic who installed wrong spark plugs (long threaded lengthen) then started up and destroy the spark plugs and nicked valve faces and seats. I restored the valve seats with valve grinding compound without special valve seat, just lapping the valves. Pretty hard work, made me nervous but I put the heads back. It was not bad. My mechanic took his responsible for not check or match new plugs to old plugs before install...Guess what? Aluminum cylinder walls (bores) not wet steel liners. WTF....the reason he replace spark plugs was the engine has rough running and sold tune up job but no help to solve rough running even customer is not complaining about it. I told my mechanic that I think there is motor mounts cuz I spot wet leaks from the motor mounts that might cause the engine shake. Normal as I see many modern MBZ have similar rough running. I've not see a MBZ comeback...

You know it's a joke andjust know a little about H4 with air cooled engine. You are correct that I never heard of 550 Spyder before. No, very rare H4 air cooled engines with 4 camshafts and no chain timing used. Use beveled gears and dummy shafts. I know you guys never heard them before.

so...DON"T buy a Porsche if you can't afford maintenance, hell, the repair bills would be SHOCKING
i can imagine that! yes it would be something like this, Camchains wasn't common back in those days, pushrods and bevels was still used widely.
and indeed, that would be a beauty, I can appreciate your passion and wish to get your hands on those...and good luck and I hope you do.

Wow, that's a complicated engine!

Not just Porsche. it's Euro things. My wife had VW Rabbit and maintenance was damn expensive. My mom's BMW cost almost $400 for change a oil but oil last 15,000 mileage, I think. I almost buy Audi A4 due AWD but I learned about parts was so expensive so I picked Subaru.
