I'm currently taking an ASL 101 class, and I'm having a little bit of difficulty.
I missed a class where they had watched "For A Deaf Son" where we had to write an opinion paper on what we thought about the movie.

And because I missed the movie, my instructor asked me to goolge the movie and Tommy Tranchin, then write a report. It seems simple, but somehow no matter what I google, all I'm finding are peoples opinions about the movie.

This is where I could use some help, I've called every movie store around my area, no has the movie, and I've even tried searching google, yahoo, and youtube for clips and whatnot, I found nothing.

So If anyone knows of a site that I can find the movie or an actual summary of what the movie is on and about, that would be wonderful, I need as much help as possible!

I don't remember seeing this movie "For a Deaf Son". If it is about oral. Then they, especially the mother, are trying very hard to teach their son to speak and not use sign language. I don't know if he was very depressed about not be able to be around deaf or Deaf people so he could communicate whether he sign or not. If they were trying to put him in the hearing world and no deaf people to communicate with, then he might have a hard time knowing who he is as a deaf person. He need to have a balance between two worlds and he could choose which world he want to be in. Trying to be control by hearing parents can be frustrated and not happy when he could do what he feel comfortable with as a deaf person. The hearing parents are not alone and there are many other hearing parents trying to "fix" and want him/her to speak and not sign which is sad. Just need to let it go and go with the flow with a deaf child and listen to what the deaf child say or want to say even in sign language. Do not press the deaf child to make him/her to be like the hearing person, that is impossible. You just can not do that. Forcing the child to be like the hearing person is not the way to go. The hearing parents have to accept him/her as is like a deaf or Deaf person. I read the review and I want to summary to what I think of what they say. :(

Actually I think he killed himself. So it was as bad as Bebonang thinks.

What do you mean by so it was as bad as I think? Clarify this for me, please. :cool2:

That statement of yours above about how frustrated by the oral way chosen by his parents and no choice for him. I think that is why he would commit suicide.

You are right and I guess that is what I sum up with the idea of how he had problems for himself and his parents plus the mainstream school and that is my guess. No one will never know how he committed suicide and why. That is very sad. :(

have you tried your local library or college/university? The ASL labs at UVU (Utah Valley University) has pretty much all those documentary videos and we are able to use the Language lab to watch them. It is a good video, but it left me pondering ALOT!

How would I really react as a hearing mother with a deaf child? Now that I know ASL there is no doubt in my mind about signing...I think my whole family should learn at least SOME skills in the brother/sister's communication method.
