I'm curious to who likes using a FM system? I'm not at university, school or anything but I'm finding that the FM system is rubbish when I do actually use it. I mainly use it for meetings.

If you do like it, can you tell me what you use it for?
Also if you hate it and why?

I used one at school and hated that I couldn't hear the other people. I used to pretend that my body receiver was on, when in fact it wasn't, lol!

My use has been different than for many on this forum. I did not encounter one until in church as an adult. I do like that use and it has been more for clarity than more volume than I can get from just my hearing aid. I posted links to illustrate what I have used in this thread http://www.alldeaf.com/hearing-aids-cochlear-implants/102015-fm-advantages.html

The only personal item I have is a neckloop. I got my first one when I found the ear bud that came with the system uncomfortable because I had to hold it in just a certain place in my ear. That would hurt by the time service was over; so I bought my own neckloop. At. this point the ear bud would not be enough alone.

Overall, most young folks aren't huge FM system fans. I haven't worn one since 89. I like being able to actually hear everything that goes on around me.

Wirelessly posted (Blackberry Bold )

They definately have a place - especially in setting like worship services, lectures etc where one really needs to focus on only hearing a specific voice(s) which are linked through the FM mics, to the exclusion of all others.

It's really a very personal thing - and if it works for you (general "you") then great. If something else works better that's just as great.

I think it's important for both 'sides' to recognize that their are people who love FM, and those who hate it.

Also FM has come a long way since the 80s and even 90s which is something those remebering FM from that time also need to remember ;)

Oh yeah..... I just hate how they are pushed as an knee jerk Must Have Accomondation. I think audis should have the attitude " this might be helpful, but it's by NO means good for everyone." And yes I know that FM has miniturized, but there are still many kids who find it not that helpful.

And besides, you can speechread or sit/stand up at the front.

and in the classroom you can request circle seating......there are many ways to listen or get along without FM

I remember those big wires.

Had body worn aids up till about 6 years and through great, no more wires, then got put with this body worn fm system. At least I didn't have to wear that at all times.

I had the first ear level receivers in the Uk, they had big loops on the bottom which my school thought I was wearing ear rings when I was not allowed.

The most annoying thing is that they had to be sent off when the shoes needed to be replaced.

I've decided to wear just one receiver so I get what is going on around me but also better access to the person who is speaking. Even tho I have the FM plus M, I still didn't like it.

Thanks everyone.

You know you were a dhh kid in the 80's/90's when you rocked a body worn auditory trainer with the S&M harness.

Ugh. *shudders*

I remember those brown trainers with the red (means no FM) and green (means low battery) blinking lights. I stopped wearing them when I entered junior high school (7th grade) in '96, thank God.

I don't remmy the blinking lights..... but I mean it was such a universal experiance wearing them......like I see pics from Deaf Schools with kids with auditory trainers and just have flashbacks......
