I just read about this case today, and would like your thoughts.

Florida Judge OKs Abortion for 13-Year-Old
Governor Says State Will Not Appeal Case Any Further

By JILL BARTON, AP

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (May 3) - A judge ruled that a 13-year-old girl at the center of an abortion fight with the state may terminate her pregnancy, and Gov. Jeb Bush said Tuesday that the state will not appeal further.

Juvenile Judge Ronald Alvarez ruled Monday that the teen, who has been in state custody for four years, would not be physically or emotionally harmed by the procedure. Last week, Alvarez blocked the girl's abortion until a psychological evaluation was completed.

''He ruled that she is competent, that she has made a decision and that she has a right to act on that decision,'' said Howard Simon, executive director of the Florida American Civil Liberties Union, which represented the girl.

It was unclear Tuesday whether the girl, 14 weeks pregnant and known only as L.G. in court papers, had yet undergone an abortion. Calls to the girl's attorneys seeking an update were not immediately returned.

State Department of Children & Families spokeswoman Marilyn Munoz said the agency would ''respectfully comply with the court's decision.'' She declined to provide further details.

''We are working for the best interest of the young girl,'' Munoz said.

The teen became pregnant after running away from the DCF shelter where she lives.

''It's a tragedy that a 13-year-old girl would be in a vulnerable position where she could be made pregnant and it's a tragedy that her baby will be lost,'' Bush said in Tallahassee.

The department had argued that the girl was too young and immature to decide for herself to have an abortion. The agency said state law prohibited the agency from consenting to the procedure.

The girl told the judge last week as part of the psychological evaluation process that she wanted an abortion, citing her age and no way to support a baby. The girl's ACLU attorneys argued that Florida law protects a minor's right to choose an abortion.

A measure is moving through the state Legislature to require notification of parents or guardians when girls seek abortion. In 2003, the Florida Supreme Court struck down a 1999 law requiring parents to be notified if their minor daughters seek an abortion.

When I read this article and I was shocked by this comment:
"Look, if the judge has ruled, it's time to move on."
I almost get a heart attack. Honestly, I would think that they will scream for judge's blood or nonsense like "Culture of Life" craps but.. it went so quiet which made me feel bit uneasy about what they will plan to do next. I (or we) guess we will find out more by tomorrow or later on.

"The department had argued that the girl was too young and immature to decide for herself to have an abortion. The agency said state law prohibited the agency from consenting to the procedure."

They are f**king retards. She was too young and immature to have a baby either. I must admit that I haven't read all of these articles concerning about that girl though but how did she got pregnant? Accident? Rape? Incest? It is not entirely clear on that part.

Regardless of her age, it is her body so therefore it is her choice to make.

This is troubling to me....Abortion should NOT be used as a method of Birth Control.

 oh my dear

The government has no right to rule for her.

Where's teenage girl's parents?

I would of support if my teenage daughter want to abort it.

The girl has been in the state's custody since the age of 9. Forgive me, though. I'm not familiar with the facts of this case well enough to comment about it very much. I have nothing to back this up other than supposition, but I believe this girl got pregnant while in state custody, and DCF didn't have the authority to give consent for the abortion, so they took it to a judge to make ruling. The judge ordered a psychological evaluation be performed on the girl. When that was completed, the judged ruled that the girl was competent and knew the risks of the procedure, so he ruled that the abortion could be performed.

I see all kinds of girls between the ages of 10 and 18 come into my office pregnant. I'm not as concerned with ages 16 and older as I am with the 10 -15. My only thoughts are how did the child have enough time to get pregnant by her 13,14,15 year old boyfriend and at the age of ten why did she have a boyfriend to begin with. I always wonder where the supervision is in these cases. I'm not sure I fully understand how they say this girl will not be emotionally harmed by the procedure. What about when she gets older and realizes exactly what she did? How can they know how this is going to affect her. I really think that she is too young for this. But as I have said before, abortion is not an option for me but I do not condemn or judge those that choose to have one.

I agree with you about this. When I heard about the ruling, I sat back and had to wonder what the heck is wrong here. The child is in the state's custody. This means she was either in a foster home or a group foster home. How was she being supervised? Who was doing the surpervising? Was this girl raped? :dizzy:

Bottom line... This little girl should NOT be in the position she finds herself in.

I agree, OB... this girl shouldnt had been in this position to make such choices consequently. Sad. :( Tears at the heart...
